some senate republicans, a minority of senate republicans, would have at the time perhaps been okay pass being a ukraine aid package without doing anything for our border, but most members of the senate republican conference didn't want to do that. among house republicans, house republicans who only a third of us are up for reelection every year, but ever member of the house of representatives is up for reelection every year, the sentiment among house republicans was i believe also one that included a lot of skepticism, a lot of skeptics, such that it was unclear that you could get a ukraine aid package passed through either house of congress, much less both. given that in the senate, even though democrats have the majority and even though the democrats uniformly support more aid to ukraine, while only some republicans do, at least without qualification, without restriction, there was in short overwhelming support among democrats for ukraine aid, not among republicans. but what republicans do want rather uniformly is more border security. so we came one this idea, why not see if we can c

monday night, almost every single senate republican, including the senate republicans who set us on the mission four months ago, declared that they wouldn't support it. for some of them, it didn't even take that long. when the text of the bill came out, senator lee tweeted, it's 370 pages long. time to start reading. three minutes later, he tweeted again, no self-respecting senator should vote for this bill. that's either record time for reading a 370-page bill or more likely senator lee didn't even open the pdf. what happened? how did senate republicans tell us they wanted a bipartisan bill only to end up opposing the very bill that they asked for? well, here's the simple truth, and there's no way around this. republicans don't want to fix the border. they want the border to remain chaotic. they want the asylum system to remain broken. because republicans in this country don't view the border as a problem to fix anymore. they view it as a problem that needs to be exploited. senate republicans have been pretty unapologetic about just wanting to keep this issue open as an election issue.

it was the decision of the senate republican leader. it was the decision of the senate republican leader apparentlyto keep us in the -- apparently to keep us in the dark and to insist on provisions like those that could have withheld funds from ukraine or at least delayed the release of some of the ukraine aid until such time as certain objectively verifiable border security metrics, benchmarks of operational control of the border had been achieved for a specified period of time. at one point or another, i think i heard half or more of the senate republican conference specifically asking for that and explaining that that's the type of thing that we would need, either that or something so -- so direct, so clear, so precise as the border security package passed by the house of representatives, h.r. 2, or, you know, at least its core provisions. some combination of provisions like those found in h.r. 2 and something like the border security metrics package that i mentioned. perhaps even with something in there putting teeth behind provision
