i am not a member of the republican party because -- i am a member of the republican party because iant to get stuff done. i absolutely believe in the more gay people they know, the more likely they are to change. i show up time and time again and there is 80% and 95% of the policies that i care about. i was out in the platform committee. there is one in 31 people that's making up those platforms. the entire state, i was unanimously elected again. the chairman of the party, matt renaulti is a close friend of mine. i know all these people. do we disagree in policies and have a heated rhetoric? do i think this is adam and idiotic move? >> it is also hateful. >> you heard me call it out. you played it earlier and you heard me call it out. it was hateful and should have never happened. it did not come up from one of our other conventions and did not go through the temporary committee. it was thrown in the last minute. here is the challenge we face. there is a lot of republicans that did not want to feel like they were softening the language with everything going on with all of the drag s

within the republican party. young florida member of congress who called for an assault weapons ban, within a week reversed his position. look, i have walked the walk that new york congressman. when i served as a young member i supported a major piece of background check legislation, went farther than many democrats would. i also sponsored the no fly, no by bill which said that if you are on the terror watchlist you can't buy a gun. the interesting thing is that the nra, before i had a voting record, was all in. the moment i started voting and have legislation that i had introduced? they abandoned me. with this new which congressman expressed is that the entire party abandoned him. then, there is nowhere to go because very frankly the democrats already have their candidates who were right on the issue as democrats see it. so, the new york congressman found himself a man without an island, a man with a party. honestly, probably made the right decision to just leave. >> molly, i have to tell you about this moment t

the problem facing democrats at this moment is how to engage republicans on this issue, when republicans refused to admit with the problem is. today, democrats and republicans on the house judiciary committee debated a new package of gun safety bills, introduced by a house democrat. during that debate, florida republican congressman greg steube, decided that after a string of mass shootings, it would be appropriate to start showing off his own guns, well zooming into a congressional hearing. >> this gun would be banned. >> that is not loaded. >> i love my, house i can do whatever i want with my guns. >> i can do whatever i want with my guns. how should democrats debate reasonable gun safety measures, when that is what the other side of the debate looks like? how do democrats make it clear that republicans are oppositions issue into any limitation on guns in america, is not just wrong, but dangerous. well, here is one example of how it can be done, from democratic congressman eric swalwell. >> 19 kids are dead. 19 children are dead. to my republican colleagues, i ask, who are you here for

despite my former standing as a republican. the feeling among democrats in california is a bit of frustration. some of the stuff that james was talking about. i feel like there is a way to balance public safety was still being a liberal, still being on a progressive. you can want to ban assault rifles but also think that cop should be protecting your neighborhood. i think there is a feeling among democrats that some on the progressive left went overboard. and chesa boudin is an example of that. we saw the school board members recalled here in san francisco. and possibly, i think the most dramatic thing, we will see what happens with governors so in the mayor's race in california. he was a mitt romney republican. that would be like me running for mayor of los angeles. if he wins that, that would be a real shock to the system. but even that he is in the game tells you that the democratic base is ready to look for more sensible, reform oriented agenda. it's sort of part of the rebellion of the norm of democrats. they just want nor

it happened because republican senators and a republican president, five out of the six supreme court justice were part of this majority decision were appointed by a president who did not win the popular vote. we need to elect democrats to the senate so we can fix this problem. leigh ann: i want to ask about that specifically. you mentioned some of the justices appointed by president who didn't win the popular vote. perhaps you and other democrats in the senate, are you discussing changing the process of confirming a supreme court justice? sen. smith: i'm talking about the need for broad democratic reform here starting with reforming the filibuster, the rules of the senate so that a minority in the united states senate cannot stop us from putting into place laws that the vast majority of americans want. the protections of roe v. wade are broadly popular in this country in the united states senate is unable to act on that because of senate rules. i'm talking about that and looking at reforming the electoral college or at least having some sort of law around a national topic so presiden
