are republicans in congress prepared for the backlash they will face? rnment funding cliff and a debt ceiling coming up in four weeks, and they don't even know how to solve that. i think, alex, we are in a constitutional crisis. i really believe that people are tepid in saying that. but i would say not just because of trump and musk, though, they are facilitating it. the constitutional crisis is because the republican congress has collapsed. it has collapsed. it is listless. it is meaningless. it is not providing the check that the constitution suggests it should in this environment, for the lawlessness and corruption of trump and musk. the only two fixes are in the courts, which we're seeing. but it takes time. but the immediate ability to rush to the fire is the congress. and they've just laid down and said, hey, donald trump's running this place and elon musk is as well, and we're giving up any authority. we're in a constitutional crisis. the policy debates about education, foreign aid, waste, fraud and abuse, that's just the result of elections. but

his goal was to put the union back together as quickly as possible and many republicans in congress felt the same way. but of course, the question would be what would be the requirements to do so? and generally speaking, though, there were divisions within the republican party. generally speaking, the consensus was to reenter the union. southern states had to, of course, abolish slavery except the 13th amendment. they had to accept the 14th amendment, which granted citizenship to former slaves. and they also had to grant voting rights. this is before the 15th amendment, but there was an expectation as part of the military reconstruction acts that southern states would give black men the right to vote. and so, yes, grant and congress wanted to put the union back together as quickly as possible, but they also wanted to make sure that the issues that had caused the war would not reemerge and that southern states would acknowledge the end of the war, would acknowledge the end of slavery, and be willing to move forward. so how long had the 13 the 14th amendment been in effect? a good question

and republicans in congress somehow seem okay with letting them do that. the us government has a system of checks and balances for a reason. it's one of the foundations of this democracy. if the republicans really had a mandate to lead, that's what they should do. or at least that's what they should be trying to do. but they're not. congress has the power to appropriate funds. it has the power to cut budgets, it budgets, it has the power to pass bills and to create, eliminate or restructure federal agencies. our system of government provides a process to make these sorts of changes. if only our lawmakers still had the political will to make that happen. but trump is now doing it on his own. he's using executive orders and legally dubious action, forcing the courts to get involved in more than 40 lawsuits are currently pending against this administration. now, something potentially more nefarious is happening. president trump, having already bypassed the legislative branch, is trying his luck with the judicial branch. he posted this ominous message on truth
