thomson reuters' ashwani kaul says, even though the economy is improving, it may be too early for any real revenue recovery. >> i think earnings will outperform. you know, whether or not we're going to see that top line growth that the street is looking for is still up in the air. but, definitely, there's going to be bottom line improvements. i think earnings will outperform analysts' expectations, but i think everyone is waiting for that top line number. >> reporter: in the last few quarters, companies have done everything from trimming headcount to slashing r&d to control costs. so, some firms have been able to chop-chop their way to profitability. according to thomson reuters, it's typical for about 6% of s&p 500 names to show profits growing while revenue is shrinking. this year, however, 16% of the s&p 500 have managed to trim so much fat that earnings grow without the help of sales. despite that nifty accomplishment, experts say corporate america is running out of things to cut. investors are anxious to see some action on the revenue side this reporting season. miller tabak stra

but the fact remains, if you take a look at the latest earnings estimate from thompson reuters, my boys up in boston just send me this note, if you look at the s&p, the total estimate for the third quarter minus 22%, that will be nine consecutive quarters of losing, or declining earnings. the third quarter estimate for the financials, as we said, up 337%. my god. well, if you back out just two little stocks of the 80 in the financial index, aig and citi, look, oh, my lord. down to minus 17%. quite a disappointment, isn't it. well, it's interesting, obviously those stocks up about 40% during that period of time. but there's lots of ways to look at it. just keep in mind when you start seeing huge rebounds in earnings numbers for the financial sector. another thing to watch is going to be energy. because the energy group is among the worst in terms of the forecast there. but if you back out energy, that minus 22 estimate for earnings, goes to just minus 7. so fun with numbers. scott, back to you. >> that is funky. >> yeah. absolutely. back with the closing countdown? >> we'll be right back

we've seen nearly $5 billion in deals according to thompson reuters. that's down nearly 40% from this time last year. just ahead of the financial crisis. and down more than 50% from 2007. the year that deals peaked globally. most of the deals we've seen have been in cash, and stocks. one year after the financial crisis, leverage buyouts are virtually dead. according to capital like rich peterson over at s&p, we've seen only about $12 billion in private equity deals this year. that's about 3% of the total here in the u.s. compared to pre-financial crisis levels when they were close to 30%. so right now, without that credit being as plentiful, at least not in the same way, we aren't seeing those leverage buyouts. the biggest deal yet still up in the air. the clock is ticking, the uk takeover panel is expected to said a deadline for wrapping up that deal sometime this week. maria? >> bertha, thank you very much. let's get a closer look at the mergers and acquisitions. frank at sullivan cromwell. gentlemen, good to have you on the program. welcome. >> good

reuters poll has u.s. inventories rising by about half a million barrels in the past week. and that could put a cap on any type of price rise we see in the oil complex. add to that rising inventories for products as well. and we are seeing gasoline margins at the lowest levels that we've seen since january. you can see that in the spreads we're seeing there. natural gas prices, natural gas the october contracts sold off today after the 50% rise we saw in that contract since the lows of september. but that contract has now expired. november is the front month. keep in mind, november had been trading about $1 premium to october. so don't be surprised when you see that kind of move when you look at the prices tomorrow. but we may see further weakness there as the cash market is still weak for natural gas. gold, meanwhile, trying to make that push toward the $1,000 level once again. but unable to do so today. and in fact, we may continue to see some pressure there in the gold market, as they really come against resistance there at the $1,000 level. it really all is going to hin
