we also know that neighbors that lived in rex heuermann's neighborhood in massapequa park, long island have made their way in, as well as the family of some of the victims, including the sister of melissa barthelmy, the first victim whose remains were found in 2010, and the fourth victim that prosecutors say they are confident they'll be able to link and eventually charge rex heuermann with that death. cameras are not allowed inside the courtroom but we have that live feed of the hallway and rex heuermann was brought in through a secure area. the jail is directly behind this courthouse. he's been in that jail for over two weeks now. and we are told this hearing should not take long. defendants don't normally speak during this hearing. this is the first time that he will be facing the judge that will be presiding over his trial. we should -- we could start to get a better understanding of the trial schedule today. again, you have mentioned this trial will include a massive amount of evidence. there is the witness who says the killer drove a first generation chevy avalanche they say heue

today, rex heuermann will appear in court for the first time facing the judge that will be presiding over his trial. the suffolk county district attorney says we should expect the preliminary conference to not take much time and that ultimately we should also expect heuermann to not say anything, defendants typically don't during preliminary hearings. rex heuermann has been sitting in a jail cell for the better part of -- for over two weeks now where the sheriff, according to the sheriff, he has been "very comfortable" and on suicide watch. his estranged wife and two children have not visited him, she says she and the two children are distraught and shocked over the arrest. she has filed for divorce, woke up in the middle of the night shivering, my children cry themselves to sleep, they are not children but grown adults and my children and my son has developmental disabilities and he cried himself to sleep. new photos obtained by "the new york post" show the inside of heuermann family home after police searched every inch of that property for 12 days. the bathtub is cut up and tiles

the suspect arrested in three of those murders, rex heuermann, is not linked to the woman identifiedriday. who went missing more than a quarter of a century ago. details from cnn's jean casarez. >> reporter: this shows the length of time it can take to identify someone and also the advent of forensic science. it was in february of 1996 that a female went missing. we know now to be karen vergata, went missing in february. in april, there were extremities, body pars, her legs and her feet that were found there on fire island. and then it wasn't for 15 more years until 2011 that a skull was found in the gilgo beach area. now, in 2011 they were able to get dna out of the extremities from fire island, and also the skull, and they were able to discern that it was the same person, the dna was, you could say, a match. but then it lay dormant and it wasn't until 2022 when the gilgo beach investigation and the task force really ramped up that they were able to do more. take a listen to the district attorney of suffolk county. >> in august of 2022 approximately six months after we formed this g
