when rhode island elected gina raimondo won, it was first time that rhode island had elected a woman governor and a democratic governor in two decades. in massachusetts, it hit 100 straight congressional elections in which the state has elected democrats to go to congress. the massachusetts democrat who had the hardest fight on his hand last night but he still won was iraq war veteran seth molton who volunteered for multiple missions in iraq despite his opposition to the iraq war. the boston globe caught him not being fully truthful with voters about his war record. what he didn't tell voters was about the medals he had won for bravery and heroism during his time in combat. he didn't think that's the sort of thing you should brag about, so he didn't bring it up. seth moulton is now a congressman from massachusetts's 6th district. in washington state last night voters decided they would not be bamboozled by the gun lobby. they voted in washington state last night that you should have to have a background check if you want to buy a gun. they voted for background checks and they voted a

a lot about local issues, local coalitions, personality and it is remarkable when you look at rhode islandnnecticut and massachusetts, states the republicans are almost never competitive in, in federal races, they're very competitive. in maryland, larry hogan, jr. the republican is competitive and in kansas a very republican state may go democratic for governor and alaska may go democratic for governor. governors' races are harder for me to predict because, on senate races we look at, first of all party. you can't quite look as much on party in governors' races. >> it's hard to depict house races that tell us more about that district. any place you're watching? >> new hampshire is a state in the past that went where the mood was. in 2006, two congressional seats to democrat. 2010, two seats went to republicans. seeing how those states react in this elect may tell us what to expect. >> i'm looking at races that have been close the past few cycles, maybe seats that switched back and forth. maybe maloney, a democrat north of new york city, going back and forth. see what happens there. a distr

you look even at rhode island where a democratic won, but they all ran against the teacher's unions. >> things are still up in the air in the great state of alaska. one reason was the election there, they were run differently from the rest of the country. there was an interesting senate race up there. alan is in seattle. you spent time in alaska recently. how come the results came i camo slowly? >> pretty simple, geography and logistics. there are a lot of people living and working in alaska who are a long, long way from what you or i would call a city or what you and i would call a road system. the state of alaska will accept ballots, mail-in ballots as long as they're postmarked on election day for up to 10 days after that. when the democratic incumbent won his senate seat six years ago, he was losing by 1.5 points on election night, ended up two weeks later being declared the winner by slightly more than that. we're seeing that again play out in alaska. i talked to the camp last night and they were figuring that there would be 30,000 extra votes still to cast after the numbers cam
