when she read the review by her friend, dismissed her when he thought like richard wright should be the most powerful strain in black literature which is a protest novel. it was devastating. locke was more than a mentor, but admired and the person that didn't give praise easily. she didn't collect mentors readily, so it was devastating for her to read locke's critical review. she'd always been such a good student and faithful to him in that way. negative reactions from locke, wright, and ellison who called the book a blight of calculated burlesque, they didn't just hurt her personally, but devastating material consequences. it was a failure, fewer than 5,000 copies in her lifetime, which is extraordinary. she died in january of 1960 and was laid to rest without a marker, in a segregated cemetery in fort pierce, florida. at the time all of her books were out of print. and in 1971 darwin turner wrote in his book in a minor chord that it was eccentric, but perhaps appropriate that she returned to florida to take a job as a cook and maid for a white family and to die in poverty. eccentric, but perhaps appropriate. in ot
