richard brennan is the regional emergency director for the eastern mediterranean at the world health organization. he says the agency needs access to the airport to bring in medical supplies. we need to get the airport up and running in cable. so those commercial flights can come in. we need security on the ground so that once those supplies do arrive, we can distribute them confidently to the clinics and hospitals that need them. we also need the boarders consistently open to humanitarian assistance. there are some restrictions from the neighboring countries right now, we can not launch across a large cross border 8 operation right now because of some of the limitations of the borders. the backbone of health care across afghanistan is what's called the the basic package of health services project. and this was funded by international donors through the ministry of health. and it supports essential health services in over 2300 clinics and hospitals across the country. because their own laws and regulations, both donors and now no longer allowed to channel the funding through the mini

richard brennan. he's a regional emergency director for the world health organization whose jurisdiction covers afghanistan. welcome, everybody, doctors are. i'd like to begin with you. you are the acting minister of public health before the transition from the us back government and cobbled to now taliban control. so i'm curious from you. what was the plan for ask in health care system by the us and by the government and cobble after the us announced that they were leaving thank you very much. the withdrawal and the transition happened just out of the there the way it was expected. it did not give the opportunity for health system specifically in the context where the last few months of the last regime was fully stay focused on fighting and ongoing conflict in 34 provinces. and i should say, i should say that even those in, during those days, the ministry of public health and the health sector was one of those sectors deprived of require inputs and resources needed in those adapt phase of the operati

richard brennan is the regional emergency director for the eastern mediterranean at the world health organization. he joins us live from cairo by skype. hello there. can you tell us a little bit about how critical the functioning of the airport is to this humanitarian, if it yes, what we've been saying since august the 15th, since before the central government, how important is to have regular access to the airport to bring in vitally needed medical supplies since that date, we've only been able to bring in one plane load of medical supplies urgently needed supplies. because as you've indicated right across the country, hospitals, clinics running out of essential medicines, essential disposable products and so on. right now the, the couple a port is not accepting commercial slides or 8 flights. there's going to be a lot of repairs done still there. today, we've only been able to bring one plane load of supplies into the country through the airport in missouri sharif. but we do hope that we'll have more regular, a lips starting from tomorrow. rigid, if you had a magic wand, what would
