officer richard donohue took a bullet in his thigh which severed an artery causing him to lose almost of his blood. john miller has this exclusive interview with the cop who risked everything. >> reporter: this is officer donohue at the scene of that shooting. the officer who was killed, sean collier, was a good friend of his. within three hours, dick donohue would be the next to go down. did you have any idea at any point that you were looking for the boston marathon bombers? >> at first it was no. it just appeared to be some crazy random act of violence. the gunfire being exchanged and once they started throwing the bombs or improvised explosive devices that i guess you don't need to say words. this is it. these are the guys. >> reporter: not long after arriving at the scene, donohue was shot. so what do you know about what happened to you? >> my partner tackled me just to get me down and it was in front of someone's driveway, and he applied pressure trying to figure out where i was shot. >> reporter: kim donohue was at home when the doorbell rang. it was a transit police sergeant i

that would have been transit officer, richard donohue, standing right here, at the time he was shot, the street, his brother, dzhokhar, was driving away. only the police are firing. officially, state police say the matter remains under investigation. the law enforcement sources tell cnn officer richard donohue was struck by a bullet fired by police. only the heroic actions of his fellow officers to stop the bleeding in his thigh saved his life. it was a close call. there would be many. that is because when all the shooting finally finished, neighbors surveying the damage in and out of their homes found bullet holes everywhere, in this apartment above the street at the firefight. at this home across the street. this is a half a block behind where the tsarnaevs made their last stand. the home has three bullets, unless the brothers turned away and fired away from police, these bullets, too, came from law enforcement. he was not home the night of the shooting, but his niece was and said she heard and felt the bullets whizzing by, inside his house. >> these are two bullets found in your h

richard donohue is still recovering in the hospital.nterview to our senior correspondent, john miller. >> reporter: transit police officer richard donohue is learning to walk again after he took a bullet to the leg during a shootout with the two boston marathon bombing suspects. that night he almost bled to death. you have a severed femoral artery in your leg. it is pumping blood out. >> yes. >> reporter: you are draining faster than a body can reproduce that. >> absolutely. >> reporter: donohue responded to a call about an officer down. m.i.t. police officer sean collier had been shot in the head at close range. collier and donohue were former classmates in the academy and good friends. an officer down call everybody goes. >> that's right. hit the lights and get out there. i had text messages that i sent to a couple friends of mine about sean going down. somebody said are you on scene? i said yes. was it collier? i said yes. >> reporter: at the time donohue didn't realize it was the boston marathon bombing suspects who had killed colli
