and once again richard engel is there for us. richard, good evening. >> there are still tens of thousands of people tonight in this square trying for two revolutions in a single year. today the egyptian military did offer some concession but it wasn't enough. protesters today carpeted tahrir square. there were more clashes, some intense. the anger here is focused on one man. president hoseny mubarak's successor. protesters say he never implemented democracy. today in tahrir square, they hanged his effigy. and now caught up in this second revolution are three american college students on a semester abroad. egyptian television showed them looking sheepish, in detention accused of throwing molotov cocktails at security forces. back in the square, hundreds of thousands packs in. this is the biggest dem demonstration since one year ago. it's also the biggest protest of the military. they were promised democracy, now they've vowed to take it for themselves. >> reporter: would toppling the eepg egyptian military be good for the united s

berlusconi is keeping his word. >> richard engel in rome for us tonight. richard, thanks. >>> there's news about iran and the threat of nuclear weapons. there's a new u.n. report out, it says the threat has grown more real, and this happens to come amid reports israel is again considering some sort of military strike. our chief foreign affairs correspondent andrea mitchell has more. >> reporter: even before the reports released, for days, iran has been denouncing it as a tool of the united states and israel. today iran's president ahmadinejad called the head of the u.n. agent a puppet of the u.s. but the iaea reports iran is on the verge of a nuclear breakthrough to know how to build a nuclear bomb. what is the proof? experts say, satellite images show iran has built an enormous field structure that could be used to test explosives used to trigger a weapon. a warhead small enough to fit on a missile that could hit israel or europe. despite denials, experts say iran had help from a former soviet scientist with decades of weapons experience. >> the evidence l

our chief foreign correspondent richard engel is right back there again tonight. >> reporter: good evening. last time they toppled a dictator. now they want his army to go. egyptians in tahrir square took on their army and police with stones and molotov cocktails. police fired burning choking clouds of tear gas. protesters tried to throw them right back. they toppled president hosni mubarak last february. now egyptians want to overthrow the army that took over for him and promised to bring democracy. the same people are in power. they are worst than the past regime this man said. but fighting police and soldiers with stones comes at a cost. the injured are brought to this makeshift infirmary where volunteers try to revive them. almost everyone is suffocating from tear gas. the injured often came in limped sprawled out on carpets, some very young, treated with disinfectant and eye drops. the egyptian military is using more than tear gas. at least 30 demonstrators have been killed since yesterday. this video has become a new icon. egyptian troops last night dragging what appeared to be a dea

richard engel is in rome for us. and richard, italy follows, portugal, ireland, and greece.italy will be able to carry out the reforms they need to? >> reporter: well, actually since that announcement since silvio berlusconi that he will step down after key economic reforms are passed, he said he would resign after that is taken. the markets have reacted very negatively. in fact, italy's borrowing rate has risen to over 7%. and that's considered an unsustainable level. in fact, it was roughly the same percentage that caused ireland, greece, and portugal to seek international bailouts. the problem is greece's debt is too big to bail out. it's too expensive, it's roughly $2.5 trillion. so, yes, berlusconi said he would resign, but he didn't say when he would resign, and that uncertainty is reflecting very negatively on the economy here and on greek's borrowing rate. and that's really what people are watching. >> what does happen next, richard? >> we don't really know. if you watch the political system in this country, and it is a very byzantine system, there was supposed to be

richard engel is the chief foreign correspondent and is live in istanbul.s started with the arab league meeting in moroc morocco, but what dynamic are you hearing from your sources now? >> reporter: we're seeing two very different dynamics, but both of them have the same objectives to pressure syria and pressure the regime of bashar al assad, much more pressure coming from the arab league, tluding the three-day deadline to allow international observers including journalists in that they don't allow the observers to go in, they will face more sanctions. syria would have to stop the violence, no indication that syria has any intention in either allowing the observers or stopping the violence. that's diplomatically. on the ground we're watching the rea emergence of the free syrian army. it is a group of defectors, how big it is is unclear. according to members of the free army we've spoken to, they say they have a source of 15,000, who let the formal security forces of syrian government and join this rebel army, now the regime itself dismisses that number, the

richard engel has more on that. >> for the first time recognizing the seriousness of the situation, the egyptian military did today offer to make some concessions to the demonstrators. who took over from president mubarak after he was toppled gave a rare televised address. he has accepted the resignation of egypt's government and also said that presidential elections will be moved forward and take place in june 2012. the reaction was almost immediately from the crowds here in tahrir square and there are now hundreds of thousands of people in tahrir. they cried out almost in unison unjust, unjust. they want the military to step down immediately. they want a civilian government to take charge. they don't trust the military. they don't trust field marshal to implement democracy as the government, as the military has promised to do. what we're seeing right now is something of a showdown. the protesters say they will stay here, but but in that speech he said that these protests are trying to upset egypt and destroy the country's economy. will the military now try to move in and break up thes
