. >> joining me now, kristin welker, co-host of "weekend today" and richard engel in kherson, ukraine. richard, to you. the nato chief saying, this is not ukraine's fault, that russia bears the ultimate responsibility. russia bombarded ukraine with 90 missiles yesterday. at the same time, they were speaking for vladimir putin. they said, poland overreacted. >> reporter: i have lost you on the connection. if you can hear me, the ukrainian reaction has been -- we are back. so this is something of an embarrassment for ukraine. president zelenskyy quickly came out and blamed russia, even before all of the facts were in. the reason we are seeing nato saying it's not ukraine's fault is that ukraine was only firing its air defense systems in response to a massive campaign of air attacks by russia. in fact, what we saw yesterday was one of the biggest air campaigns by russia since the beginning of the war. most people here believe that this was a direct response to the loss of kherson. this city was recently recaptured by ukrainian forces. we have all been seeing for the last several days the

richard engel has more on this major milestone.elf. >> reporter: russian troops occupied this city for eight long months allegedly carrying out rapes, murder and looting, it was illegal for ukrainians to sing the national anthem, to fly their flag, and now, they're doing that, and much more, and hope to liberate more cities. kherson is a city victorious. liberated from russian occupation. and this morning, ukraine's president volodymyr zelenskyy made an unannounced victory lap to rally the people. russian troops pulled back from clearson to more defensive positions, but remain close by. so zelenskyy's visit was brief. >> how are you feeling today? >> how am i feeling? very well today. be careful. >> i understand there is a lot of security here. but how is this moment for you? >> the moment is very important. that is the biggest city that was occupied. since the 24th of february. so that was the biggest city and now it's free. so ukraine came so i am happy. thank you. >> the russian occupation of kherson came early, and was brutal.

. >> joining me now from kherson is nbc news chief foreign correspondent richard engel. a tense 24 hours, people holding their breath when that explosion was first reported worried how it might escalate. i find it interesting that the united states is saying yes, it was ukrainian air defense missile, we believe, but ultimately it doesn't matter because russia is at fault. what you are hearing from inside ukraine? >> reporter: so this has been somewhat embarrassing for ukraine, but i think the government is taking it is, confident and is happy that it is getting this kind of reception, that the ukrainians being blamed for this crisis, even though it is a ukrainian air defense system that went into poland. the reason that the united states and nato had the same line, that it's not ukraine's fault, but russia's fault, is because russia's the aggressor, russia is attacking, and last night, while this incident took place, russia was carrying out perhaps the biggest round of air strikes against ukraine since this war began a year ago in february. so russia, ukraine was respond
