richard faulkner has a phd in american history and talk 15 years -- tagught 15 years at fort leavenworth. you have a a lot of military history. why are you interested in world war i? >> i grew up on the battlefields of the american civil war north of atlanta. that was with trenches. that just stuck with me. old, myas your years parents gave me a playset with tanks and airplanes. study, it isg to really an era that is not well done in american history. you're able to plow new ground. host: we're hoping to do a little bit of that in coming to this museum and reading your book. we have talked a little bit about general pershing. over your shoulder is one of his battle flags. with the american efforts have been successful without him? guest: he is the right man at the right time. war meantand scale of you were no longer going to be the great man on horseback leading troops into battle. this is about managing huge armies and being able to sustain them. he brings important attributes. he is politically reliable. the wilson administration sent wachovia ind down mexico -- poncho villa in mexico.

introduce you to our final guest who is a military historian and a retired member of the military, richard faulkner has a ph.d. from kansas state university and taught 15 years at the command and general staff college at ft. leave inworth. so you've had a lot of military history. why are you particularly interested in world war i? >> that's a good question. i grew up on the battlefields of the american civil war and that was a period of the civil war with trenches and for some reason that just stuck with me. and when i was 4 years old my parents gave me a world war i play set. and i was building a period that i was going to study, it's really an era that's not very well done in american history, so you're able to plow new fwround. >> we're hoping to do a little of that and interest more people in coming to this museum and reading your books and learning more about this important period in american history. we talked already about general black jack pershing. over your shoulder is one of his battle flags. would the american effort have been successful without him? >> he is the right man at the right
