i'm joined on the phone now by richard henning, a flight director with noaa's hurricane hunters. he is on board a plane that just flew over hurricane michael. richard, you hear me? >> yes, kate, i can hear you just fine. >> thank you so much. you have the very latest information on this storm. what are you seeing? >> well, right now we have three aircraft actually in the storm. we have noaa high altitude gulfstream iv jet. we're at 30,000 feet flying atop the storm. we have a p-3 which is a turboprop plane at low altitude penetrating the eye wall, and we also have an air force reserve c-130 doing the same thing from a different direction. so what we're seeing with all aircraft is that the storm is intensifying. the pressure in the center has dropped all the way down to 956 millibars, which is a lot lower than it was this morning. the lower the pressure in the eye, the stronger the storm is. and the winds have increased up to sustained winds of 120 miles per hour. so this is a legitimate category 3 hurricane. >> this is a major storm. there is going to be another national update at

hunter planes. they fly straight into hurricanes to gather data used in the forecast. >> and they tell abc's david muir that michael is different in the way that it's getting stronger. >> richardng us. i know you've been flying up, observing this hurricane from above. tell us what you've noticed so far. >> well, unfortunately, david, one of the things that we are noticing is that the environment around the storm is, indeed, becoming more conducive for intensification. we were hoping that would not be the case, but that's bad news for the folks who live on the florida panhandle. the storm is continuing to strengthen with the very warm waters of the eastern gulf of mexico. i'm afraid that the forecast of continued intensification is really likely to occur. >> as you watch this hurricane intensify from where you're at, richard, what would you say to folks back here on the coastline who are preparing for this hurricane? >> i would really beg those people to listen to what emergency management folks are telling them. if they live in a storm surge prone area, this is the time to leave because this is not a storm to try to ride out. we're talking about a very, very large storm surge
