johnson space center. this is mission control houston at t-minus nine minutes and holding. the asset team has been on console since 3:00 this morning and today is led by richard jones who's overseeing his fifth launch. handling communications with the crew is astronaut barry willmore with lee serving as the interface with astronaut rick sturko who is flying weather reconnaissance around the kennedy space center in an aircraft known as the shuttle training aircraft or sta. the flight control team is monitoring all systems aboard the space shuttle along with the launch team and has just notified the flight director it is ready to support the 25th and final launch of endeavor this morning. nineteen years ago to the day that endeavor landed safely in california to end its maiden voyage in 1992. the asset team has spent the majority of its shift evaluating the weather conditions at the launch site in the event an emergency return to the shuttle landing facility is required. the team also evaluates weather at contingency runways in spain and france. presently, conditions are favorable to support an overseas landing if one becomes necessary during the launch phase.

richard nixon. i was in 9th grade, and i'll tell you what happened. i was just so very much for robert kennedy. he was assassinated and mccarthy didn't get the nomination, and he and johnsonere responsible for the war, and i just could not get behind humphre yerks. richard said he had a plan to end the war, and that sounded good to me. i left home at 14 and my parents let me go to the seminary to be a priest, and i remember the bishop one day asked me to come over to do some yard work, and i think he had heard that i was out campaigning for nixon, and he wanted to ask me about why, you know, why are you doing that? he wanted to educate me about nixon's past and all this, and his name was bishop hicki, was the arch bishop in washington, d.c., and in the 1980s, a very outspoken advocate for war in central america and all of that, but it was like, it was one of those early encounters where somebody is trying to set me straight and, you know, of course then nixon was elected and did all these horrible things and continued the war and all of that, but, you know, obviously i never looked back, but i never wanted to admit that either, so i just have. >> what happened to the prie

those things i think created a very difficult circumstance for lyndon johnson and the united states of america. >> and in 1968 richard nixon was elected. he comes to you and asks you to take on the office of economic, and opportunity, one of the crown jewels of the great society, not very popular with the public or nixon basically wanted to dismantle it. not a great career move for you, i think, but you did it. what was your rationale? >> i voted against the legislation when it was passed. sargent shriver the recently passed away had been a person who headed up the office of economic opportunity, and it started under president kennedy, and he and his brother, bobby kennedy in the justice department, had fashioned a program to try to assist the poor in the country. and then president johnson came in with his big texas approach, and enlarged it and it became the war to eradicate poverty. and if you define poverty as a certain percentage of our population, and then you try to eradicate it, it's not possible because there's always going to be a certain percentage that is in that category. and they immediately started a h
