richard jordan joins us live from where this is going on. richard, what is going on out there right now? >> reporter: looks like this will be an issue all morning long. we do have d.c. police directing traffic, so this as traffic coming from the chain bridge side you can see being directed off toward reservoir. let's get you up close to the trouble spot here where that tree came down. very large tree, roots right out of the ground. the tree fell across both lanes of traffic. there was a driver that was attempting to drive down canal and crashed right into that tree. took a lot of front end damage to the vehicle. we haven't h yet how the driver is doing. d.c. police saying it is possible that the fog may have caused some issues with visibility. so that is something they're looking at right now. the tree is still down in the middle of the road. work crews need to come out and clear that away. let's talk about the alternates now. melissa has more on that. >> as far as the alternates, if you're coming inbound on canal, you'll be pushed on to rese
