to you, i'm richard lui. frustration is growing in the air and on the ground as more of the nation's airports are hit by long delays due to forced government budget cuts. complaints are mounting and the white house says a compromise could be on the way. tracie potts has the latest from washington. >> reporter: frustration is mounting, richard, because people have to sit and wait for planes to take off. 1500 workers are sitting at home every day, furloughed, not on the job as a result of the sequester cuts. here in washington, an faa administrator was asked about that and asked why it took the agency so long to let airlines and airports know exactly who would face the hardship cuts. >> we have been talking about reduction in available controller hours of 10% for months. >> but you didn't tell them which airports, which airlines? >> we told them that they should expect significant impacts at major hub facilities. >> reporter: now, it does look like the white house and some lawmakers on capitol hill are warming

i'm richard lui. just this last hour we're told the surviving suspect in the boston bombings has been moved from a hospital to a prison in massachusetts. dzhokhar tsarnaev is being held at a facility for inmates with medical issues. the 19-year-old has been recovering from a gunshot wound to the throat. meanwhile, the boston marathon was just the first target on the tsarnaev brothers terror hit list. dzhokhar tsarnaev told investigators they planned an attack in new york's times square. justice correspondent pete williams has more for us. >> reporter: investigators say they've been told that while the bombing suspects were fleeing from boston in an suv they carjacked last thursday night they came up with the idea of driving to new york, taking along a half dozen bombs they had with them. >> in the car they made a decision to go to new york with the remaining explosive devices that they had and to detonate it -- detonate one or more in times square. >> reporter: police say one of the men, dzhokhar tsar

richard lui is there. you spoke with a number of people personally affected by gun violence?er: yeah, we just finished listening to the immigration reform panel. but the first panel of the day was on that what you just talked about, gun violence. and i had the opportunity to speak with three parents who shared on the panel the loss of their children. one person was only 18 years old, from chicago, shot in the head by a bullet. she died. on that day, her sister was at an event with president obama who was speaking on gun violence. her parents shared with me a little bit earlier the message they would like to get out. >> the president is president of the united states. each person has to be president of their own home. spending time with young people. >> when you watch the news, you see other children -- i'm sorry -- you see other children on the news and i never thought i would see my daughter on the news doing this very thing. so just be careful, whatever their decision is. >> and then there was hadiya pendleton's mother who told me about the loss of her daughter. her daughte

richard lui is here. will it make a difference? >> we looked at the numbers.00,000 employees will face pay cuts because of the sequester. the 5% obama is giving could help spare furloughs. here is how. the president's salary is $400,000 the average employee $70,00 o. the president is giving back 5%. a furlough is a 20% pay cut. the money the president gives back could save 1.5 fed employees a job. the move is getting symbolic. it's getting followers. a democrat senator is taking a pay cut and forcing furloughs of his own staff though he's not required to do so. claire mccaskill is going to do some of the same. some critics want all of congress to take a cut. if they were to do that, we ask how many furloughs does it save? >> standard pay for congress members is $174,000. if they cut their pay 20%. that would save 1300 employees from having to take a furlough, a small fraction of the hundreds of thousands hit by the sequester. if they give a 20% of their net worth? on average, members are millionaires. their combined net worth half a billion dollars. still, pal

i'm richard lui. the pentagon has bolstered u.s.hance here that pyongyang will not soon engage in some military action. this despite a top official there saying he misspoke about north korea preparing for another nuclear test. nbc chief foreign correspondent richard engel is in the korean peninsula. >> reporter: what south korean officials are saying is that they have picked up activity around a test site that north korea has used in the past to detonate underground, in tunnels, its nuclear weapons. and originally south korean officials had said they thought that north korea could be planning perhaps imminently another nuclear test. however, south korean officials now say that they're not entirely sure that a test is going to happen. only that they have seen some activity in the area. that's not particularly unusual and wouldn't necessarily be a sign that north korea could be in the last final stages of preparing yet another nuclear test. what north korea is doing, however, and this is seen as another step toward escalation here, to

i'm richard lui.o the boston terror attack is picking up steam as the city prepares to mark one week since the bombings. suspect dzhokhar tsarnaev remains in serious condition at the boston hospital with gunshot wounds including one to his throat possibly from a suicide attempt. he has yet to be charged in connection with the attack or been notified of his miranda rights. however, this morning officials tell nbc news he's awake and using pen and paper to answer questions from investigators. this as the fbi says it has obtained surveillance footage showing tsarnaev putting down his backpack near the finish line minutes before the explosion. massachusetts governor deval patrick says he's been briefed on this footage. >> the suspect took the backpack off, put it down, did not react when the first explosion went off and then moved away from the backpack in time for the second explosion so pretty clear about his involvement and pretty chilling, frankly. >> while we wait on that video, these new infrared im
