i'm richard lui. firefighters battling a national wildfire in yosemite on high alert. the california rim fire is now the largest in history. this morning, firefighters are being told to protect yosemite at all costs. nbc's jay gray is near the wildfire in tuolumne, california. what are the challenges they are seeing today? >> reporter: good morning. the same as they've been. rugged terrain, high winds. like so many in the area on edge as the rim fire winds gusted. as the fire continues to grow this morning, so does the army of teams pouring into the northern california mountains to battle the massive blaze. >> all day every day. all night long. so we're up to more than 2800 personnel on the fire. it's the number one fire in the country right now so they're giving us what we need. >> reporter: air strikes, hotshots along the leading edge of the flames. and heavy equipment digging out fire lines, moving out dried trees and other potential fuel for the flames. >> we're trying to save the public, save these dwellings and houses and make it safe for everybody. >> reporter:

i'm richard lui. the u.s. is readying for a possible solo action against syria, but president obama is facing some skepticism from congress. defense secretary chuck hagel spoke with senior congressional leaders thursday. the 90-minute call detailed the administration's evidence against assad's regime. lawmakers from both parties pressured the president for legal rationale. >> the president is going to have to make his case to the congress and to the american people. i think before he takes any action. >> but new york congressman eliot engel tells nbc news in part, quote, there's ample precedent for the president to initially take action without having a formal vote from congress. and a new nbc news poll shows 50% of americans oppose u.s. and military action in syria, and 8 in 10 believe president obama should get congressional approval before using any force. that information just in to us. we have reports now from the middle east and london for you. we're going to start with nbc's ayman moyheldin in beirut. g

"the washington post" reports the nsa has broken those rules or overstepped legal authority since 2008. a may 2012 audit obtained by the post counted more than 2,700 sdenlts in the pryor 12 months alone, most of them involved the unauthorized surveillance of americans or former intelligence targets in the united states. they range from significant violations of law to typos resulted in the unintended interception of communication. in a statement the nsa said in part, quote, when the nsa makes a mistake in carrying out its foreign intelligence mission, the agency reports the issue internally and to federal otherseers and aggressively gets to the bottom of it. the post says edward snowden provided them the documents earlier this summer. in a statement, meanwhile, he said the media is being, quote, misled about his situation. snowden says
