i'm richard lui. a search is on for nearly 300 people, many are teenagers still unaccounted for, from a ferry that sank off the south korean coast just over 24 hours ago. the death toll rose again. now to at least nine dead. among the 179 people rescued is this 6-year-old girl. she was separated from her family as the ferry sank. her parents and brother are still missing. nbc's francis coe has more. >> reporter: an agonizing wait stretched into a second day. relatives of those on board the capsized ferry hud nld the city of jindo. they grew frustrate by each passing moment. some hired their own boat to go to the site while openly questioning why the coast guard couldn't do more to find their loved ones. most of the passengers were high school student oz on a field trip to a resort island in the south. meantime, the company which operated the ferry offered an apology to families and promised to do their best to not use more lives. the words provided little comfort to families. with the fate of so many

nbc's richard lui joins us live in murray easur measure murrysv pennsylvania. >> reporter: we had a press briefing about 20 feet from where i'm standing right now. we one thing, one of those injured in the hospital right now getting a second medical procedure, a surgery at 1:00 a.m., about six hours ago. and also we learned that he had multiple stab wounds. so there is concern about what is being called an extremely critical condition injured individual. there is ten total teams now in the hospital, four of which are in critical condition. we'll continue to watch that. that as the suspect, alex hribal, named yesterday, 16 years old, a sophomore at franklin regional high school here behind me, who is he? some students describe him as quiet. others say not so well known. his defense attorney saying this was a good guy, good student, here at the high school. now, alex hribal at the arraignment yesterday, head down for most of it, some saying he looked a little somber, 26 counts total. he could face decades in prison if he is prosecuted here. we got a chance to speak with one of the students
