i've richard lui. the governor of california declares the state of emergency. nine wildfires burning across san diego county forced thousands to flee and at least 140,000 students to stay home today. this fire tornado shows how wind and heat is developing in the region. not often caught on camera, these fire vortexes can spin 20 miles an hour. now, to battle that, choppers, planes and supertankers are dropping water and fire retardants. jennifer bjorklund has the latest on the wildfires. >> reporter: as sun sets on one of the warmest may days in southern california history, the unprecedented heat and dryness made for catastrophic fire weather. >> i never thought our house would be in danger like this. but it's really scary. >> reporter: homeowners forced to evacuate as flames chased them out of their neighborhoods. some will have nothing to come home to, despite their best efforts to clear brush and be fire safe. >> i tried to make it as good as possible, but naturally who cares right now, you know? >> i've never seen anything like this in 20 years. >> reporter

good morning to you, i'm richard lui. we start with this. a snapped clip may be to blame for the high wire accident that sent eight acrobats plummeting in rhode island. a carabiner which is a common clip was found in pieces on the ground after the accident. all eight acrobats are still hospitalized this morning. four in good condition, four in serious. ron mott has more detail. >> reporter: it's hailed as a human chandelier. eight females hanging just by their air. but it turned frightening in a flash. their fall cushioned only by a thin rubber mat leaving them and a male performer below with multiple broken bones and in one case internal bleeding. >> they're in shock. they didn't expect their equipment to fail. >> reporter: officials are focusing on the attachment point affixed to the rafters. the fire chief said a single carabiner clip, a steel hook about five inches long and half inch thick designed to hold 10,000 pounds broke. >> when you get into those kinds of heights with people, it's dangerous. it's a dangerous occupation. >> reporte
