all of a sudden at 3:00 in the morning, richard nixon decides to go on television, even though he hadot lost the election yet. and this is the media watching it. and, of course, i, who was assigned to photograph nixon, was with him at 3:00 in the morning on november 9th as he went to the podium at the ambassador hotel and conceded the election to jfk before he had actually won it. and that was an extraordinary move on nixon's part. four hours later, "the boston globe" announces his presidency. and this is a wonderful picture taken by a very, very fine photographer. as the early morning newspapers arrived at election campaign headquarters. by midday, the election had been decided and jfk became the first catholic president of the united states and, you know, he rallied his entire family here for this group picture. his brother-in-law who was an entertainer, actor, teddy, his youngest brother, robert kennedy, one of his sisters. of course his mother and father and ethel. and jean kennedy's husband over there, smith. really this is a -- kind of an interesting little moment and, of course

the fullest account of it we have is by richard nixon. it is in one of his memoirs and he said that kennedy in one of these meetings said something to the effect -- it is too close to know who won the election. i'm not sure if kennedy said that. my guess is that kennedy may have felt that, but he was not going to confide to richard nixon when there's 11 states still in dispute that hey, it's still not clear who won. i don't think that's what happened. kennedy's assistant said as they were leaving the game and heading back to where kennedy was, he said, how did it go? kennedy said, i think it's better for the country that i won.
