richard? >> phillip, as you know in covering these stories, when is the next truck going to arrive? we understand that some of the freeways and the thoroughfares were kept open for the purpose of allowing supply trucks to keep on making it to these distant areas where gas is needed. did the owner or the worker there indicate when they might be getting more gas? >> reporter: they did not. i talked to them earlier and they were one of the last to say open because they had one of the latest shipments, which was earlier today. at this point, those shipments have stopped and everybody is hunkered down and there's no more gas, at least in this area here. >> what's the tone? you had that great interview with that one gentleman. he seemed a little concerned but not too concerned. when you don't have gas, you turn on the lights. the light turns on. you go to a gas station and you get gas. and now the stations don't have gas. are they a little worried? >> reporter: at this point, the people that wanted to leave are most likely gone. the ones that are coming here that are looking for supplies,

i'm richard lui in for phillip mena. >> good to be with you. i'm frances rivera.ow a tropical depression irma is still threatening southeastern states. its heavy winds and rain pummelling savannah, georgia. the governor expanding an emergency declaration across the entire state where one person died after a tree fell on their house. the death toll from the storm now at 40. irma brought extensive flooding to charleston, south carolina. look at the downtown area covered in water and nearby an isle of palms the winds whipped up a spout from the atlantic spinning into the beach, dump ping even more water on the flooded shore. >> over 8 million people remain without power meanwhile, while new footage comes in, thrashing homes and vehicles. surging in a lobby in miami. one of the many cities devastated by flooding. the florida's governor gave an update on the response. >> everybody is going to work hard. the way i think about it, we have to keep everybody safe. we have to get, we've got to get our hospitals back open. we have to get our fuel back here. we have to get ou

i'm richard lui in for phillip mena. >> i'm frances rivera. hurricane irma thrashing the gulf coast this morning. swallowing up the state, first made land fall in the florida keys. once again, up marco island, irma is now a category 1 and is expected to weaken to a tropical storm. it poses great danger with up to 85 mile per hour winds. here's naples being battered by those winds. tearing apart homes and scattering debris across flooded neighborhoods. and from sarasota here is a closer look at the disaster in action, ripping the roof off a building just one moment there of widespread destruction. in tampa, the hurricane snapped power lines and blew up transformers, bright explosions cutting through the dark night sky. official say the storm has knocked out power for more than 3 million people across the state and the chaos is only growing. >> while that is all happening the fort lauderdale police department arrest the 9 people for allegedly looting. the department is telling residence to stay home, warning here going to prison over a pair of s

. >>> i want to get to phillip mena live in hollywood with the latest. what are you seeing? >> reporter: richardit is -- it is dead here. and that is a good thing. there are mandatory evacuations right here as we see the wind picking up as we speak here. so there are not too many people in the streets. we're only seeing maybe one car every half hour or so. there's a gas station that's open that doesn't have gas anymore, but they have a few supplies if you've chosen to ride out the storm here. in the last few moments, we noticed the wind pick up a lot. still not a lot of rain, but most people have taken heed of the advice. we were told by the police officer that the areas here, at least the residential areas, are about 80% now evacuated. most people here taking this storm seriously and getting out. >> thank you very much, phillip mena, not far from miami, north of there. thank you. as florida braces for a force of nature that is hard to fathom, any hurricane, especially category 4 or 5, can be devastating. we go to nbc's tom costello who really looks at the power of the hurricane-force winds for
