that because i was moved by the profundity of what you had to say about the artistic genius of richard pryor and this is bob newhart talking about prior. tell me about your respect for his craft. >> he is just huge. i may have mentioned, i am not sure. i received an award from the kennedy center. and pryor was the very first to receive it. which to me, was very appropriate because what mark twain was doing at the turn-of- the-century, talking about life on the frontier, talking about life in the inner city. they were doing the same thing. as a comedian, the language doesn't bother me at all. i know all the words, they were directed at me very often. but i would feel cheated, describing life in the inner city, gosh darn it is not life in the inner city. i never found it offensive. i think my bone is just a piece of genius. i gave him the comedy award and he turned to me, in a wheelchair at the time and we went to commercial and came back. i handed him the lifetime achievement award, and he looks up at me and says, i stole your album. i stole your album and you're into. i walked into a record

there could be a richard pryor bio pic on the way. y weinstein starring as pryor could be michael b. jordan or eddie murphy so they should continue jamie fox or chris tucker. what could make this film special is it's being made from pryor's last wife who is providing pages from pryor's private journals. it's an honor to have you in the guest spot. tell us what kind of person emerges from pryor's journals. >> thank you so much. it's great to be here, toure. i love your show. i love everybody on it. yeah. the diaries are vivid in richard's recollections. his childhood is poignant, colorful, extreme. it jumps off the page when you read it especially in his own handwriting. and obviously this formed richard in his entire life. colorful in his recollection but of course not without a great deal of pain and humor. >> you talk about the way that his childhood formed his whole life. he talked about growing up in a whore house. both his mother and grandmother working in the sex industry. how did that impact the man he would become and his work?

i did something on the "n" word where richard pryor and chevy chase said it so many times you could notple are so sensitive. >> right. no, it's ridiculous. the thing is i was watching the episode and i'm a huge fan of the show. but putting that aside, i was waiting and i was talking to the producers over in new york, i was like where is the offensive part? i don't know where it's offensive. at the end when they showed the mustache, here's the deal. if the guy had a regular mustache like a regular americanized mustache, you wouldn't even be able to tell that he's playing an asian guy at that point. and they're talking about ancient martial arts, that's an ancient mustache. i think it would be too far if he starts speaking with a terrible asian accent and starts eating a dog in front of everybody. that would be really offensive. >> the whole crew is laughing. i'm trying to conduct a serious interview and you have the entire studio laughing. >> really? >> does it bother you at all -- when i read the introduction i said the all-white cast. does it bother you there is no diversity on a show
