[applause] >> well, it's a pleasure and an honor to be here at the national conversation with richard. i will restrain my temptation having read so much of your work about the presidents to ask you about this current president, but instead to talk about this new book of richard's which is a remarkable book about an absolutely, i think, astonishing series of events in 1948-'49. it was particularly important to me, i lived several years in berlin both as a student and then teaching at the free university which was founded at precisely this period. >> right. >> so, um, and one of the things that was really, one of the major events every year and the years that i was in berlin was the german-american friendship day which is held at the airport, and the spirit of it is always recognition of the men who were involved in the airlift. berlin was a great place to be an american throughout even the roughest times in the postwar period because of the airlift. so it's i thin
