that's where our richard roth is live for us tonight. chard, it was every new year's eve dick clark transformed it into rocking new year's eve. tell us about the mood where you are tonight and the place dick clark made so famous. >> reporter: that's right. since 1972, john, dick clark as one man told me was the symbol of times square, except for one or two years for various reasons, especially when he had his stroke, dick clark was here overseeing the millions and then counting down america to ring in a new year. i'm sure everyone remembers various occasions and where they were listening to dick clark and that countdown. one man who did is donald trump, who i asked about his memories of mr. clark. >> i would watch "american bandstand" and i would also watch every new year's eve. dick clark was the one. he was a unique guy. again, a really quality person. i knew him very well because he lived in my buildings. he just is a spectacular man. >> reporter: dick clark was born just north of here in mt. vernon. a lot of memories of people here of

richard roth is live there. richard, what's on schedule today and what is the mood there?we're here in times square in new york city and we're here with two of america's most famous athletes. there's a 100-day countdown kickoff to the olympics. i'm with greg lieu guy nis and shannon miller. do you feel the fever? >> definitely. we're here for the raise the flag awareness. we can be a part of the olympics to have the olympic flag that's going into the opening ceremonies and sponsor a stitch in the flag 37. >> shannon, gymnastics was your specialty. what do you think the athletes who are going over to london should be focusing on with 100 days to go? and a lot of them still don't know if they're going. they have to win at the u.s. trials. >> that's right. we're at the 100 day mark. it's go time for all the athletes. qualification process is beginning. i think for the athletes it's all about staying focus. there's so much going on with the olympic excitement. you have to stay focused on what you're doing and stay healthy. it's about staying healthy and making it through quali

sitting down with richard gough american author and professor at new school university his new book occupied economy challenging capitalism itself in the next few months mr roth thank you very much for staying down to speak with me thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to years ago you said that the crisis would take not just a few years but much longer to overcome it is a common belief that the so-called financial crisis is basically over the one that started in two thousand and eight where do you think the u.s. economy is right now i think the way to answer that question is to recognize that this crisis is a crisis of the entire global system and where it is extremely bad at one moment it will be relatively easier at another as the symptoms move around for example the united states was in much worse shape in the first two years two thousand and eight and two thousand and nine compared to europe two years later the years two thousand and ten and two thousand and eleven reverse the united states is not the extreme problem europe is and the financial crisis but we talk about is as severe today in europe as it ever was in the united states the banks
