richard roth. richard, thank you so much for joining us.at are your sources telling you about this urgent u.n. security council meeting? >> reporter: there's interesting concern for weeks about developments in ukraine. violence, takeovers of buildings by pro-russian supporters as ukraine soldiers stand by and now a deadline about the government ready to use force to stop them. who's backing who. the widening crisis in ukraine. and so here at the u.n. in a few hours we'll have an urgent security council meeting. maybe behind closed doors. some countries want it to be an open public session to publicly make the case and lodge accusations against other countries. the u.n. is not able to take coordinated action because russia is a permanent member of the security council and has a veto. there's widespread interest in having this event, this could be like the tenth i think u.n. meeting over the last five wreaks but not done anything to resolve this crisis. the u.n. provides a forum. ukraine is pushing for the meeting. we'll see what the russian

senior united nations correspondent richard roth joining us live now. so richard, russia actually demanded this meeting. what have you learned about what they want to get out of the meeting besides, i guess, publicly stating their case? >> reporter: well, that's right, because the senior officials in moscow have made it clear that they feel russian citizens are going to be under attack after ukraine's leader says force will be used against the activists and others taking over buildings. there have been increasing violence in the last few days and weeks. this was going to come to a head for russia which is watched ukraine demand at least eight or nine united nations or general assembly meetings. a troubling sign is could be asking for meetings. we don't know if russia says we have to take military means because of the threats. this is definitely an urgent security council meeting with unknown consequences right now. it's a closed door meeting. we'll certainly get a better idea afterwards as to the level of rhetoric or action that moscow might be threateni

as richard roth was saying there was no outcome on either side. we've seen russia being accused of orchestrating affairs and russia accusing the west of doing the same. so diplomatically, we don't seem to be getting anywhere. there is another meeting in geneva on thursday scheduled, but certainly lavrov and the russian ambassador to the u.n. both said that those talks could be derailed if force was used by the ukrainian authorities against the people in the southeast. so diplomatically, that is the situation, an impasse on the ground now. we wait to see whether the ukrainian authorities make good on that threat to send in the army. so far, and the deadline passed about an hour ago. nothing seems to have happened. but these pro russian separatists have not taken down their barricades or moved themselves out of these government buildings that they've occupied. and let's be very straight about it. what we saw in crimea does seem to be replaying itself. you see these same uniforms without any sort of insignia. you semen who seem to be very well organi

for now, we want to go to richard roth live at the united nations. we heard russia blame the west in that meeting and claim the situation very dangerous. what do the u.s. representatives say at that meeting? >> well, this was again, another heated session at the security council. sunday night fighting, verbally, that is, that deadline looming where ukraine said this time it will use force against the pro russian activists who have taken over multiple buildings who ha razed over people. samantha power and batal batali churkin making their case at the security council sunday night. >> reporter: the human stakes of what is happening in ukraine are extremely high. the lives of innocent civilians are at risk. yet we are being bombarded by russian disinformation and propaganda while the ukrainians are being confronted by incitement and violence. the united states stands with ukraine, and the fundamental principle that the future of ukraine must be decided by the ukrainian people. >> there has already been bloodshed in the southeast. and the situation is ve

richard roth, and he's there at united nations. what are your sources telling you about this urgent meeting from the council about to happen? >> reporter: well we know that the meeting will be a public session, and likely speeches by russia and ukraine. if it's like some of the other meetings, there will be a response to the previous remarks made by an ambassador, could be a very long, interesting, sunday night. several weeks have passed sense we've had a session like this. but as mentioned, as that ultimate tim deadline to act against separatists, russia requested a meeting. now the russia wanted it private. behind closed doors. other countries, likely the u.s., too, wanted it public. we will have this airing of grievances. u.s. ambassador to the u.n. samantha power earlier on "abc this week" said violence and takeovers, handiwork of russian authorities is all over it, according to her. >> it has all of the tell-tale signs of what we saw in crimea. it's professional. it's coordinated. there's nothing grassroots seeming by it. we'v
