joining me now, keir simmons live in jordan and richard engel. keir, you interviewed jordanian leaders and i've talked to officials here and they've been denying any of the air strikes last week in retaliation for the death of the jordanian pilot, and the gruesome video of him being burned alive, that any of those air strikes were within 140 miles of where kayla mueller had last been known. that said there's no way of knowing where she was and again, no way of knowing when and where she was killed. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. in fact the commander in the jordanian air force told me a few days ago that the isis claims that she had been killed by a jordanian air strike were lies. and he specifically said andrea that they had not been bombing in the place that isis said kayla was. he then went on to raise some substantial questions. he said you can't trust isis. he pointed out that in fact isis in the jordanian government's view had lied about when that jordanian pilot had died. and he said that how could isis know who if you like was bombing t

keir simmons, richard engel, chris jansing at the white house. let's go to the capital of jordan where it is 4:00 in the afternoon, that's where we find keir simmons. we're just seeing the leading edge of jordan's assaults on isis. >> i think you're right. the minister here saying they plan to throw everything they've got at isis. 30 air strikes. more we believe today that haven't been confirmed and there are reports of further strikes around that area of iraq in which isis' stronghold in syria. an extraordinary show op public opinion here in jordan. thousands on the streets. as you said that protest headed up by queen rania herself. young people say we will not be frightened by isis describing this as now a war between jordan and isis. the crucial question jose will jordan send ground troops in to take on isis on the ground? this, of course is a majority far, far majority sunni country. if there is that kind of shift, it will be a crucial turning point and we'll see whether or not that is the kind of decision that they make. but at the moment it'

joining us nbc news correspondent richard engel, and curd fighters take on the isis terrorists. first, to keir simmons in jordan's capital with the latest on the round of air strikes. what are you hearing? >> reporter: hey, alex. we are hearing there have been f-16s, and also reports unconfirmed by nbc news that f-22s, a-10s were also involved in accompanying the aircraft. certainly the u.s. will choose the targets. targets we believe include the area of the isis strong hold in syria. also being reported that there are real attempts to ensure -- to rescue any pilots whose plane go down. what this has done alex appears from what we witnessed from the ground today is brought the jordanian people up in arms. speak to people on the streets, they say to us that this is a war between isis and jordan. quite a shift in public opinion here against isis. >> and can you estimate the numbers of people that took to the streets? appears the tenor of the march is filled with anger. >> reporter: real anger, thousands, one suggestion is around 7,000 people involved here in this demonstration today, alex and ministers

nbc news chief foreign correspondent richard engel is live in iraq and keir simmons is in amman, jordant? >> yeah that's right. you said there, he screwed with the wrong king. in a sense they messed with the wrong country. we're seeing extraordinary things here. thousands on the streets protesting against isis. we're hearing from some here that queen rania herself. this is an extremely muslim country. for it to be overwhelmingly turning against isis in this way is really really crucial. having said that it's important that we don't try to paint a picture as if this is just happening now. it's worth remembering, for example, isis attacked the iraqi/jordanian border. that's not confirmed, but that's what's been reported toward the end of last year. this country has had a long fight with extremism with sunni extremism and this is the latest stage of it. but it does seem to be galvanizing opinion here and galvanizing support behind those air raids. >> it is striking though that this young king mike barnacle who is not quite so young now, has stepped in and has been under fire for quite some
