let's go to richard wolf. thank you for being with us tonight.t a dicey answer for jay carney today? >> i don't think so. look, you don't have to go very far into washington, d.c., to see golf clubs which to this day don't allow women on the property and it wasn't that long ago that african-americans couldn't play, jews, irish couldn't play. i don't see why at this time in 2012 2012 this should be a difficult question for anyone to answer. >> what did you think of mitt romney's response? it's an etch-a-sketch response, wasn't it? >> i think he obviously thinks that women should be allowed. the construction doesn't open up the idea so much as sexism. he could only answer it if he was running augusta. you don't have to manage the company to have a moral position on something so clear about equality in this country. >> critics, i can just hear them now, will probably come out saying president obama is using the masters golf tournament as a prop because we're having this big discussion about the war on women. is that fair criticism? >> not really. it

joining me tonight is msnbc political analyst, richards wolf. great to have you with us on this subject tonight. has paul ryan run into a buzz saw here? he has people in his own party in sensed. they are soft walking this now that they see the stance of the catholic church anthropology how radical this budget is. how does he keep going? it's never a good position to say, really, my policies are moral. you're starting with a good position there. it's not a new debate and not something they haven't faced before. in 1999, there was a guy running for president, who took on people just like paul ryan. house republicans and the gingrich mold. what he said at the time, this republican candidate was he wasn't going to balance the budget, in his own words, on the backs of the poor. that republican candidate was george w. bush, talking about something called compassionate conservativism. that was the philosophy he was trying to say to the country. look, i have other values than just making money here. set aside what happened in his presidency for a minute

bring in our political panel with us from washington, richard wolf and fellow columnist for the hill,see sell dem rats as having a bar on women but the krik hes you heard after the fair pay act, is that emblem attic of the challenges romney faces with women and women's issues? >> i think there are two challenges, number one, the romney campaign is not ready for primetime. that's an obvious question to expect to ask and have an answer to if you do a conference call about attacking democrats for what they have done for or not for women. there is that problem. secondly, certainly it is a problem because it is not first of all the 92% we know that number is completely flawed and in fact i think most people are calling it the man session if i am not mistaken, and actually it was women who for the most part were really the sole bread winners for a lot of families over the last couple of years. it also shows a fundamental ignorance about what the war on women is really about. it is not just about statistics. it is about how we are çtreate. it is about the level of conversation. it is about
