political analyst and "washington post" columnist eugene robinson, and msnbc political analyst, richard wolffe. great to have all of you with us tonight. richard, let me go to you first. your thoughts? i thought that tonight they came after mitt romney in a big way on taxes and also his job record, and i must say, i thought he was well prepared and fenced it off pretty well. your thoughts? >> well, they certainly came after mitt romney right out of the gate there. but i thought his response on taxes, on the tax returns question was terrible. he stammered his way through it. he's trying to project leadership and that he can be president and his best answer on releasing his own tax returns was "time will tell." probably april, who knows? you know, this is not a confident position for someone who should have been seen this one coming and is going to face this question again and again if his tax returns ever come out. >> well, rick perry, governor from texas, knows pretty much he's not going to win this thing, so he thought he'd go on the offensive with mitt romney when it came to taxes. here's th

let's go to gene robertson and also richard wolffe. eugene, you first. do you think the gingrich campaign feels pretty good about themselves tonight? >> i think they feel okay. they certainly obviously wish there had been crowd reaction. newt plays well off the crowd. and that sounded like a guy making the best of an okay debate performance and a debate where there weren't a lot of fireworks whereas he's the guy that likes the fireworks. >> richard, let's just say the report about the $5 million is not accurate. let's say it's less than that. where does that put newt gingrich in florida? >> there is only so much money you can spend on ads between now and voting time in florida. i don't know that you need the full 5 million. i'm sure they could bankroll and borrow it and get themselves through the election in reasonable shape. the fact they haven't put up any ads yet shows how much of a beating gingrich is taking. i think his edge in the polls is giving people like rick confidence in the polls tonight. gingrich did struggle off freddie mac. he should have

i'm joined by jeff johnson, richard wolffe is an msnbc political analyst and contributor from washingtond.c. richard, i want to start with you. your reaction to hearing that speech. do you think a lot of people are going to have whiplash after seeing that? >> he said despite the differences, the gap between them on the issues, he still thought he was the best person. there's a mirror image for huntsman, which is he wrote about what a great leader president obama was when working for him and now, according to the speech he just gave, he thinks president obama is engaged in class warfare and has somehow weakened america around the world and before just not so long ago, he thought mitt romney was a disaster and couldn't be elected and now, he's the greatest person ever. there is whiplash twice over with huntsman. he's general speech. the general tenor of it, the words, very patriotic, very nicely delivered. if only he could have executed even his announcement speech in that way, he might have been in a better position, but the whip hash effect is real and it's about his service for presiden
