let's turn to richard wolffe. great to have you with us. it's a heavy lift. i guess you can give the republicans credit for trying to do. can mitt romney convince americans what happened in the bush years and what started to dig us in this hole. >> if he does that, there's a bridge in brooklyn that he will want to sell voters this november as well. we showed this president had to go into deficit spending to help try and move this country out of recession. the vast bulk of this, you have to remember came after president clinton gave president bush a surplus. i was there in 2000. president bush campaign saying it wasn't the government's money. it was the people's office. by the time he got into office aided by karl rove, they decided they were going to give up the people's money and we were going into recession again after the incident bubble burst and they would spend the people's republic money. it was chinese money they spent. they continued to do that all the way through into their recession. this recession and the recession spending from tarp came on their

let's bring in political analyst richard wolffe. what do you make of this unfolding on the campaign trail today? what did we learn about mitt romney or get reenforced? >> we had this conversation a few weeks ago. i said the kind of comments that we saw the end of 2008 on the john mccain campaign, that ugliness, that meanness was going to come back earlier and come back more loudly than we saw it before. our unhinged friends said that was an outrageous suggestion and this general election campaign has been go for a couple of weeks and we see this kind of comment. it's not just about leadership. it's about what kind of argument mitt romney wants to present to the country. one of damaging things for democrats in '68 was the images of the extreme nature that was broadcasted. his campaign will get tarnished about it. that's why he has to speak about it. if you're going to make the critique about the president, you've got to do it yourself. >> i want to ask you about the story that's unfolding here about a foil terror plot. the forces wor

joining me tonight is richard wolffe. good to have you with us tonight. >> thanks. >> why do you think they are dogging the obama administration so much on national security? is it because mitt romney can't speak to this with any experience at all? >> i think there's something deeper going on here. for many years the bush administration, conservative, republicans have felt they had a monopoly on this idea of having a strong foreign policy. there's lots of conservatives out there. politicians who said a year ago that this wasn't really because of president obama. this was really the result of the bush policies and their intelligence efforts. they want the credit. they don't feel that this president or democrats in general should have any credit for having a strong foreign policy. the premise of the entire republican contest was this president has appeased america's enemies and engaged in working to help america's enemies and undermine its allies. they said that time and time again. that's what romney has said. this facts d

joins us for the must read opinion pages nbc political analyst richard wolffe. have you. >> good morning. >> we'll talk with the atlantic. they're attacking the bayne capital argument policy. this is what the attacks on boehner are really about, what kind of person romney is. it's about character, whether he feels the pain of average folks and seen as callous and greedy. it's another in the seemingly endless litany of depictions of romney as an out of touch rich guy. romney has tried to engage the bayne critique on this level issuing a video for out of work americans and telling more stories about regular people on the campaign trail. he hasn't done an effective job fepding off the bayne critique, and maybe this is why. the idea he lacks empathy becomes so deeply embedded it's impossible to shake. >> yesterday joe biden was certainly striking that familiar chord. you look at biden talking, and then you look at mitt romney, and it's obvious will that one guy is connected with working class americans and the other one -- i'm not knocking romney. he is what he is.
