joining me now is msnbc political analyst richard wolffe, author of "revival:the struggle for survivaluse" and solinda lake. >> thank you. >> have you ever seen a candidate hurting so much at this point in the campaign? >> i'm sure i have, but i've blanked it out. not in a long time. this is the gift that keeps on giving. and then the mistake after mistake in every aspect of their operation. the pirate thing, trying to really argue that barack obama is redistributed. and every day they make these mistakes, no conversation about the economy. >> when you look at he's trailing in three key states, nbc poll, colorado, the president now is up by five. iowa, the president is up by eight. wisconsin, up by five. i mean, these are critical states, and big numbers. >> and add ohio, add florida, add pennsylvania. i mean, this is just unrelenting bad news. and mitt romney still can't get back on track. and nobody likes mitt romney anymore. >> can he win without ohio and florida and some of these states? >> mitt romney can't. he's got one path to the white house. he has to go through those states.

richard wolffe, i don't doubt this an inflection point we led into the show with mitt romney talking about making america stronger and again beating this drum of conflict overseas. one point he said there's only one conflict allotted in the president's defense plan as if americans have some sort of blood lust for going into various countries around the world and engaging militarily. do you think the gop can turn this around for mitt romney? >> no. there are a couple of problems, major problems, that mitt romney has underscored with his performance over the last 24 hours. one is that, as a challenger, especially against an incumbent president you need to look presidential, sound presidential, check off the presidential box that also means checking off the commander in chief box. didn't talk about afghanistan in any meaningful way in his convention. and obviously has fumbled very badly in the last 24 hours. that's one bar. another bar is, these presidential campaigns are very bad ways to test what a future president will be like. the one glimpse we have is when events happen. a crisis

richard wolffe, though he did it und under duress. >> if you are alex witness, putting a gun to my head's my gun. >> and saying, make a call, i would say obama by 2 points. but, this is where i push the gun away and say but, in a two-point election, anything can happen. comes down to turnout and comes down to the dynamic of the last couple of weeks as well. you know, one thing i think is hard to poll is that people like to vote for the winner. they like to vote for someone who feels like it's going to be the winning side. >> yeah, val dates them. >> but there's also bragging rights. in the last couple of weeks you'll get a sense of -- >> momentum. >> momentum, who's got the winning feel to them. and that's going to come out of the debates and where that new cycle is. so that's a couple of points right there. and turnout is a couple of points, that's a couple of points. but like i said, if this is 2004 all over again, it's in reverse partiwise. but it's a one or two-point race. >> one, there you have it. coming up at noon, richard will review the upcoming rnc and we'll talk about where m
