senior writer for "wired" who writes for their national security blog, the danger room, and nbc's richard wolffe don't know, i don't know much about waging war. i do know a little bit about living life. and these generals are writing absolutely crazy letters which i don't have time to read to a judge in a custody battle. >> right. >> a woman who has lost custody of her son, and in this country it is not easy for women to lose custody of children in these situations, the judge has decided she is a liar, she changed the kid's name without telling the father, took the kid out of state without telling the father, all sorts of crazy stuff documented in the case, and you have these two generals writing to the judge as if they know something about it, telling him that oh, no, no, she should get more custody of the child. these letters to the judge i think are the major evidence of just how out of it these two generals are. >> right. look, i don't know that any of us can pronounce on the rights and wrongs of any other person's family business, but what on earth are these generals thinking of. do they no

>> richard wolffe. >> vice president. >> unbelievable. >> who's the top of that ticket? hil griffin. >> so richard -- >> very strong. >> let's talk about, you know, we were just saying earlier last hour, it's very easy, as a republican, my first reflex is, you've got just a weak presidential candidate, that's why we lost. that's legitimate in the presidential race. but then you start digging down into the senate races, the state-by-state senate races, again, where you have to deal with a broader electorate than just a focused race. and we republicans lost race after race after race. and as john cornyn said accurately, it wasn't just one wing of the party. it wasn't just todd akin. it wasn't just richard mourdock, it was tommy thompson in a state where scott walker republicans dominated every state legislative race. there is something wrong with the national republican party. >> i think there are multiple things. there's a process question for start, primaries getting hijacked by the extremes when they got no interest in reaching out to the middle. but there's also a polic

richard wolffe is vice president and executive editor of msnbc.com. msnbc political analyst. and jay newton-small is a diplomatic correspondent for "time." richard, i want to get your sense of the president's thinking here. now, i think the most successful thing he ever did in terms of policy or personnel was naming hillary clinton, the senator from new york and former first lady, to be his secretary of state because he established a second principal out there besides himself in foreign policy. he could let her lead the way as his partner, a minister, a foreign minister. not a staffer, she had her own stature apart from him. that's my preference. you need that creative tension, and second terms die when the president gets too comfortable with the people around him because he's promoted them from within. i look at all the recent presidents that have screwed up that way. you know my prejudice, and i hope it doesn't get in the way of my feelings towards these candidates. what do you think is going on in the president's head right now based upon the influ

i'm joined tonight by richard wolffe, msnbc political analyst and vice president, executive director and editor of msnbc.com. and david k. johnson, pulitzer prize winning journalist and author of "the fine print." david, you first tonight. what do these job numbers mean? how good are they? >> oh, they're good and they're good in the details. all of the job growth, ed, was in the private sector. 184,000 private sector job, there were some losses in government jobs, that's why the number is 171,000. they revised upward the number of jobs for the last two months. so remember jack welch and the republicans saying, they were manipulating the numbers and attacking the professionalism of the people who do this work, well, they actually understated things a month ago. in addition, the number of people who voluntarily quit their jobs, that's an indication of how confident people are, they can find a new job, that number went up so that's a very good sign. and there is another number in the different report, the number of housing vacancies, both rental and owner occupied has declined which tel
