this is what i find extremely interesting, richelle. a few days before somer goes missing another girl age 5 from the same neighborhood, there is an attempted abduction on her. she is riding her bike. she's alone. a hispanic female with two males in the back seat try to lure her into the car. your mommy sent me to come get you. she wants me to give you a ride home. they have to be connected, richelle. >> they haven't officially said that, though, right, nancy? they might just be holding back that information? >> i don't have to see the thunderstorm to know it has rained. if i go outside and women are running by with their raincoats on and men are putting away their umbrellas. i know it has rained. please, richelle, this was a couple of days before somer goes missing. one block away. a 5-year-old girl similar to somer attempted abduction. a good samaritan intervened and saved that little girl's life. >> nancy, we have been paying close attention to what somer's mother is going through. i want to play some of that now. >> i did her hair f

a lot of buttons pushed here, richelle. the innocence project of texas says it's not clear how many people have been wrongly accused or convicted by these so-called scent lineups but they call it junk science. now, basically the practice uses blood hounds to match the scent from evidence to the scent of a possible suspect. it's a dog scent lineup. they use dogs to walk along a row of ten cans containing the scent of individuals and the dogs try to sniff out which may match evidence from a crime scene. here's one reason why it's so controversial. in 2006 a texas sheriff's deputy found himself to be a murder suspect at that time because of a dog scent lineup. now, his neighbor had been strangled to death with a rope. he repeatedly denied involvement in his neighbor's death but investigators sided with the dog who picked his scent out. but then dna evidence implicated another man who pleaded guilty after five difficult months the deputy was finally cleared. >> i've cried myself to sleep enough times and had enough nightmares a

let's first go to richelle carey who is with us. richelle, this is some story. my goodness. >> and the story does seem to continue to change, vinnie. the latest detail being that we thought, as we watched this thing develop for the better part of two hours today, we watched this experimental aircraft that richard heene and his sons, one of them being 6-year-old falcon, this was a family project, they made this thing together. the story goes, no one was ever supposed to fly in it, all right? the story goes that we thought somehow falcon ended up in this aircraft. he was able to untie the rope here, he or a brother, we don't know yet. but for the better part of two hours from larimer county to weld county, we were riveted, watching this thinking that 6-year-old falcon was in this aircraft. and it ends up coming down. the best of all circumstances, if you can say that about this, there's no builds anywhere. it comes down in this field right here in weld county. rescuers rushed to to it thinking they're about to save this child. there's no falcon. along the way, the

i'm richelle carey. investigators in clay county florida, say none of the registered sex offenders living in her neighborhood are suspects in the death of somer thompson. the florida girl's body was found wednesday in a landfill in georgia. no one saw the 7 year old get abducted on monday. at least no witnesses have come forward to say that. authorities have been collecting evidence from a vacant house in somer's neighborhood undergoing renovation including a dumpster on the friday. somer was last seen in front of that house. the autopsy is complete but authorities will not say how she died. >> we know the cause of death. our focus is on preserving the integrity of this investigation and not releasing any information that in the long run would prevent us from prosecuting and convicting the person who did this to somer. for that reason at no point will we discuss the cause of death, the manner in which she died or any other details regarding what was done to this child. >> the last person to see somer app

i want to go right out to my colleague here at hln. 9 one and only richelle carey. you have been on top of this story since it launched, so to speak, and it went from gut-wrenching, terrifying to now a lot of people wondering what was really going on behind this. there was just a news conference this afternoon. give us the latest. >> this news conference was a little unusual, jane. the sheriff of larimer county was almost like a defendant. he made his case for why he continues to believe the heene family. he was peppered with questions and these are some of the highlights. he says first of all, they didn't just take -- he and his department didn't just take the heene family's word for it. they brought in other experts who said that to them, the family's affect seemed appropriate for a family that was truly worried about where their child was. he also says that they talked to experts who say that this particular type of experimental aircraft could carry the weight of a child. they had reason to believe it was plausible that this child could have been in this aircraft

i'm richelle carey. felony charges may be filed as early as today against richard and mayumi heene for claiming their 6-year-old son on board a mylar balloon when it floated thursday. you watched all of that happen. . now the lair mar sheriff says it a publicity stunt dreamed up by richard because he wanted a reality tv show. the couple's attorney, david lane, says his clients took a polygraph test. doesn't know the results. still the heenes are willing to turn themselves in, if necessary. >> they are my clients. i've heard a lot from them. yeah, i mean, at this point, and obviously, this is something the public rolls their eyes at, unfortunately, but the presumption of innocence should be given to them and the sheriff, having a press conference, saying they're guilty, does not make them so. >> the parents are denying that this was a hoax. but they still could face a series of felony charges. talking things like conspiracy, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and also attempting to influence a pub

"prime news" correspondent richelle carey had a chance to sit down and talk to him. >> you gotten fromt being devastating to being a survivor to now calling it a backhanded blessing. >> yes. >> what was that journey? how did you get there? >> it was quite interesting, what happened. five years later, when i was diagnosed as a survivor, i didn't say anything about it until that time. until i was over that hump. that five-year hump. and i was at a golf tournament in north carolina, wilmington, north carolina, and the beauty of this event is that every year you get to see where the proceeds from the previous year went. and this particular year, they were raising money to buy a vehicle to go out, outside of the city, and test people. and i said, that's incredible. i mean, people can get free examinations and whatnot, and it's much-needed. because being a survivor myself. and the shock on everyone's face. yes, i am a breast cancer survivor. well, that was an eye-opener. i said, you know, i should start talking about this. and the feedback, so many men have come up to me and said, you know,

hello, alison. >> hello, richelle.w, not even record-setting earnings from apple were enough to give stocks a boost today. investors were cautious following disappointing results from dupont and coca-cola and a weaker than expected report on the housing market. new home construction rose by half a percent last month. that's a step in the right direction but weaker than expected. permits for new building projects declined. the dow lost 50 points. the nasdaq sliding nearly two-thirds of 1%. college costs have increased dramatically over the past decade a new report showing they are now higher than ever. a survey released revealed tuition and fees at four-year private schools rose almost 4.5% to more than $26,000. and public four-year universities saw charges spike 6% for both in-state and out of state students. unfortunately, the availability of financial aid isn't keeping up with the climbing costs getting even tougher to go to school. >> that's not a good thing. those poor kids and their parents. thanks alison. >> make

hi, virginia. >> hi, there, richelle. consider this. convicted drug dealers doing yoga or convicted murderers meditating. apparently prisoners are taught new ways to cope with the stress and chaos of life behind bars and some corrections officers are saying that violence is down among prisoners who meditate. also, buddhist experts are saying it's important to teach anger management because it helps in the case of dangerous overcrowding in certain prisons. now, the founder of the prison darma network says the ill packet of buddhist teaching is real. there are opponents to this. critics say meditation doesn't work and prisoners may be tempted to use it as a way to impress a parole board. now, other facilities particularly in strongly christian areas have shown some discomfort with the idea of enabling eastern religions in the past. but prison yoga and meditation networks will expanding. in fact, buddhism has grown in the united states, and to see how much, go to cnn.com/crime. >> all right. very interesting. i hope people do. we touched o

i'm richelle carey. this is hln "news and views" on this friday. get started. 6-year-old falcon heene, he is safe with his family. but a lot of unanswered questions surrounding that balloon that was launched from his family's backyard yesterday. this was the scene as it took off. >> 3, 2, 1! >> whoa! >> what are we really seeing? we're still not sure. the heene family says about the time the balloon was launched, that's when they realized their youngest child, falcon, was missing and feared somehow he had climbed into the basket of the balloon. >> it was the worst thing i ever heard in my life because all that i could think of was that perhaps he had fallen out and somebody that was here suggested maybe he jumped out. we were hopeful that might have occurred. >> clearly, they look upset. well, the balloon launch set off a nearly two-hour ordeal. this thing flying across colorado. you saw it live here on hln. but now many people are asking questions, was it a publicity stunt? maybe a hoax on the part of the family. during a televised interview this

let's bring in our correspondent richelle carey with the latest to get everybody up to speed. go ahead. >> first of all, mike, the judge refused to throw the case out, so that's not happening. the incident happened in 2007. police say that an astronaut, lisa nowak drove from houston to orlando. i'm noo houston and can tell you it's a long trip. she went non-stop said to accuse her romantic rival dating an astronaut once involved with her. police say the nowak dressed in disguise, peppersprayed a shipment in the parking lot at the parpt in orlando, charged with kidnapping batley, burglary and assault. her attorneys say the prosecution withheld evidence. they say there's a document that shows that shipman was never injured by any pepper spray. well again, the court refutesed to throw out the charges. they will allow the defense to depose coleen shipman on this new evidence, mike. so, that's where we are right now but clearly there's more to talk about now. >> definitely. okay that's for getting us up to speed. what happens next? we'll clear all this up for you. first off, pam, l

the problem i had, richelle, is here is friday, saturday, sunday, monday, tuesday.at's only about 500 miles. in five days it's only going to move 500 miles. we're going to have this spinning of wind around and round, category four hurricane, it's the same thing, just different ocean. as it comes around, i'm very much concerned what could happen to manila, kind of the same thing that happened to new orleans. where manila could actually be flooded from the wrong direction. everybody expects the rain to come in this way. but as this wind comes around and into manila, this is going to take hours and hours, but this the problem. there are going to be hours and hours of wind from the same direction driving itself right into manila bay. manila is literally right on the ocean. there's nothing -- there's one foot between houses in the ocean here in manila. so all of this, 20 million people in manila and the provinces around manila, 20 million people may be in the way of a front to back flood basically the same thing that happened in lake pontchartrain in new orleans as it pu

i want to go right out to my colleague here at hln, the on and only richelle carey. have been on top of this story since it launched, so to speak, and it went from gut-wrenching, terrifying to now a lot of people wondering what was really going on behind this. there was just a news conference this afternoon. give us the latest. >> this news conference was a little unusual, jane. the sheriff of larimer county was almost like a defendant. he made his case for why he continues to believe the heene family. he was peppered with questions and these are some of the highlights. he says first of all, they didn't just take -- he and his department didn't just take the heene family's word for it. they brought in other experts who said that to them, the family's affect seemed appropriate for a family that was truly worried about where their child was. he also says that they talked to experts who say that this particular type of experimental aircraft could carry the weight of a child. they had reason to believe it was plausible that this child could have been in this aircraft. he

richelle carey had a chance to suite down and talk with him. >> you've gotten it from being devastating to being a survivor to now calling it a backhanded blessing. >> yes. >> what was that journey? how did you get there? >> it's quite interesting what happened. five years later, when i was diagnosed as a survivor, i didn't say anything about it until that time, until i was over that hump, that five-year hump. and i was at a golf tournament in north carolina, wilmington, north carolina. and the beauty of this event is that every year you get to see where the proceeds from the previous year went. this particular year they were raising money to buy a vehicle to go outside of the city and test people. and i said, that's incredible. i mean, people can get free examinations and what not, and it's much needed. be a survivor myself and the shock on everyone's face, yes, i am a breast cancer survivor. well, that was an eye opener. i said, you know, i should start talking about this. and the feedback, so many men have come up to me and said, you know, as a result of reading your story, i went an
