i'm richelle carey. this is your hln "prime news" break. the nation's education secretary and attorney general made with chicago mayor richard daley wednesday to combat violence against school-aged kids. this visit was prompted by the killing of 16-year-old derrion albert. the honor student was beaten to death when walking to a bus stop. >>> the eighth anniversary of the war against al qaeda and the taliban in afghanistan was noted wednesday. a new associated press poll suggests public support for the war is decreasing now at 40%, down from 44% in july. >>> and the outgoing mayor of east cleveland says that leaked pictures of him in drag cost him his chance to get re-elected. mayor eric brewer says the picture on the right of your screen is him. he says that picture and others were stolen from his home computer. he's now pushing for a criminal investigation. that's a look at the headlines. i'm richelle carey.

"prime news" correspondent richelle carey had a chance to sit down and talk to him. >> you gotten fromt being devastating to being a survivor to now calling it a backhanded blessing. >> yes. >> what was that journey? how did you get there? >> it was quite interesting, what happened. five years later, when i was diagnosed as a survivor, i didn't say anything about it until that time. until i was over that hump. that five-year hump. and i was at a golf tournament in north carolina, wilmington, north carolina, and the beauty of this event is that every year you get to see where the proceeds from the previous year went. and this particular year, they were raising money to buy a vehicle to go out, outside of the city, and test people. and i said, that's incredible. i mean, people can get free examinations and whatnot, and it's much-needed. because being a survivor myself. and the shock on everyone's face. yes, i am a breast cancer survivor. well, that was an eye-opener. i said, you know, i should start talking about this. and the feedback, so many men have come up to me and said, you know,

i want to welcome our prime news correspondent richelle carey joining us for our "what matters" segment. >> what makes derrion's death so much more senseless is the number of people who did nothing. it seems the code on the street known as no snitching has kept people quiet. this is hard to watch but i'm going to show it to you because you need to see if you haven't already. that's the problem. so many people have seen it. this is cell phone video that someone shot. there are about a dozen people who stood around and did nothing, didn't even call police, and are not calling police now. what can be done to get people to step up? joining me now, the director of see spire and she knows derrion's family. i know that derrion is going to be buried tomorrow and i know you've been in touch with his family. i also saw something this week where a member of derrion's family said the way they were getting through was praying for forgiveness. how are they getting through? what can you tell me? >> well, you know, this is a hard thing to deal with. community wise as well as family but they're just get

let's first go to richelle carey who is with us. richelle, this is some story. my goodness. >> and the story does seem to continue to change, vinnie. the latest detail being that we thought, as we watched this thing develop for the better part of two hours today, we watched this experimental aircraft that richard heene and his sons, one of them being 6-year-old falcon, this was a family project, they made this thing together. the story goes, no one was ever supposed to fly in it, all right? the story goes that we thought somehow falcon ended up in this aircraft. he was able to untie the rope here, he or a brother, we don't know yet. but for the better part of two hours from larimer county to weld county, we were riveted, watching this thinking that 6-year-old falcon was in this aircraft. and it ends up coming down. the best of all circumstances, if you can say that about this, there's no builds anywhere. it comes down in this field right here in weld county. rescuers rushed to to it thinking they're about to save this child. there's no falcon. along the way, the

i'm richelle carey. investigators in clay county florida, say none of the registered sex offenders living in her neighborhood are suspects in the death of somer thompson. the florida girl's body was found wednesday in a landfill in georgia. no one saw the 7 year old get abducted on monday. at least no witnesses have come forward to say that. authorities have been collecting evidence from a vacant house in somer's neighborhood undergoing renovation including a dumpster on the friday. somer was last seen in front of that house. the autopsy is complete but authorities will not say how she died. >> we know the cause of death. our focus is on preserving the integrity of this investigation and not releasing any information that in the long run would prevent us from prosecuting and convicting the person who did this to somer. for that reason at no point will we discuss the cause of death, the manner in which she died or any other details regarding what was done to this child. >> the last person to see somer app

i'm richelle carey. this is hln "news and views" on this friday. get started. 6-year-old falcon heene, he is safe with his family. but a lot of unanswered questions surrounding that balloon that was launched from his family's backyard yesterday. this was the scene as it took off. >> 3, 2, 1! >> whoa! >> what are we really seeing? we're still not sure. the heene family says about the time the balloon was launched, that's when they realized their youngest child, falcon, was missing and feared somehow he had climbed into the basket of the balloon. >> it was the worst thing i ever heard in my life because all that i could think of was that perhaps he had fallen out and somebody that was here suggested maybe he jumped out. we were hopeful that might have occurred. >> clearly, they look upset. well, the balloon launch set off a nearly two-hour ordeal. this thing flying across colorado. you saw it live here on hln. but now many people are asking questions, was it a publicity stunt? maybe a hoax on the part of the family. during a televised interview this

i'm richelle carey. hope you're having a good day.day. senate finance committee member olympia snow is supporting the panel's version of health care reform. she's the first republican to come out in favor of any of the health care reform proposals pending before congress. the finance committee is debating this legislation right now. a final vote is expected this afternoon. the chairman of this committee is max baucus. he drafted this proposal, this legislation with input from republicans. but snow is the only republican who says she will vote for it. >> people do have concerns about what we will do with reform. but at the same time, they want us to continue working. and that is what my vote to report this bill out of committee here today represents, is to continue working the process. i do it with reservations because i share my republican colleagues' trepidation about what will transpire on the senate floor, what will emerge in the house/senate conference and how indeed the finance committee bill will be merged with the health bill.

i want to go right out to my colleague here at hln. 9 one and only richelle carey. you have been on top of this story since it launched, so to speak, and it went from gut-wrenching, terrifying to now a lot of people wondering what was really going on behind this. there was just a news conference this afternoon. give us the latest. >> this news conference was a little unusual, jane. the sheriff of larimer county was almost like a defendant. he made his case for why he continues to believe the heene family. he was peppered with questions and these are some of the highlights. he says first of all, they didn't just take -- he and his department didn't just take the heene family's word for it. they brought in other experts who said that to them, the family's affect seemed appropriate for a family that was truly worried about where their child was. he also says that they talked to experts who say that this particular type of experimental aircraft could carry the weight of a child. they had reason to believe it was plausible that this child could have been in this aircraft

let's bring in our correspondent richelle carey with the latest to get everybody up to speed. go ahead. >> first of all, mike, the judge refused to throw the case out, so that's not happening. the incident happened in 2007. police say that an astronaut, lisa nowak drove from houston to orlando. i'm noo houston and can tell you it's a long trip. she went non-stop said to accuse her romantic rival dating an astronaut once involved with her. police say the nowak dressed in disguise, peppersprayed a shipment in the parking lot at the parpt in orlando, charged with kidnapping batley, burglary and assault. her attorneys say the prosecution withheld evidence. they say there's a document that shows that shipman was never injured by any pepper spray. well again, the court refutesed to throw out the charges. they will allow the defense to depose coleen shipman on this new evidence, mike. so, that's where we are right now but clearly there's more to talk about now. >> definitely. okay that's for getting us up to speed. what happens next? we'll clear all this up for you. first off, pam, l

richelle carey is here with more as we continue to follow this one. this case has got some folks rattled. >> oh, yeah, mike. the pilots claim, we know, they were working on their laptops, i mean, just engrossed in something clearly and they lost track of time and they overshot the runway at the minneapolis airport by 150 miles. so clearly they've got some explaining to do. so authorities think -- they think the pilots fell asleep. so this is the letter they fired off. this is what the faa said -- "you engaged in conduct that put your passengers and your crew in serious jeopardy. northwest flight 188 was not in communications with controllers or the airline dispatchers." this is the best part. listen to this, mike, "while you were on a frolic of your own" -- yes, frolic, "this is a total dereliction and disregard for your duties." so effective immediately, mike, their licenses have been revo revoked. so frolic, mike. frolic. >> is part of the frolic the snooze? is the faa flat-out saying we think you were snoozing? >> yes, yes. >> let's get that clear

i'm richelle carey. thanks for your time. we're keeping a close eye on wall street right now. the dow is down about 200 points, 226 points right now. consumers may still be worried about spending money. the labor department says personal spending fell half a percent last month. largest drop in about nine months. yesterday the dow was up about 200 points because of excitement over the economic growth in the third quarter. the nasdaq and the s&p 500 are also sharply down today. down more than 2%. we'll keep an eye on this situation for you. >>> the coast guard officer says a major effort is under way to contain an oil spill in san francisco bay. a tanker is leaking bunker fuel into the bay right now. look at that. the coast guard says it happened when oil was being transferred from a fuel barge to the ship the dubai star. no one knows how much fuel spilled into the water. we're following the story for you and we'll bring you more information as soon as we get it. >>> the coast guard searching for possible survivors after a mid air collision off the coast of california. a marine

hi, everyone, i'm richelle carey. this driver led police through at least five counties. he is in custody, likely to face quite a few charges and in quite a few counties. this started when the suspect allegedly drove off from a gas station without paying. when the driver reached the city of melissa, officers tried to stop the truck using road spikes. we've heard of those before. as the driver swerved to askroid them the truck nearly hit the chief of police in melissa. the driver is accused of assaulting a police officer. i said it came to an end after more than two hours. that happened finally 60 miles south of dallas in navarro county. police, you can see a little while ago they rammed the truck several times from behind. it ended in that swampy ditch. you kind of saw what you think you saw when they pulled him out of the truck, looked like he was talking on his cell phone. it is amazing how many of you were watching this chase. all two hours of it. when i put comments about it on my facebook page i was flooded with your comments back to me. this is some of what you had

hello, i'm richelle carey. we have reports on the overall health of michael jackson when he died.utopsy concludes the pop superstar was basically in pretty good health. the associated press obtained a copy of the report. this is what it said. it said jackson weighed 136 pounds. it does seem small but that's actually in the acceptable are not for a 5'9", tattooed eyes and lips, balding, heart was strong, chronically inflamed lungs that at times left him short of breath. he suffered from a disease that left him with patches of white skin. he had arthritis in his lower spine and some fingers and mild plaque buildup in his leg arteries. his face and neck were scarred, presumably from plastic surgery procedures and his arms were covered with punctures. he was not sickly. his major organs were normal. jackson died june 25th after his personal doctor administered an anesthetic. no other drugs were detected in his system. >>> for the first time we're learning details of elizabeth smart's kidnapping ordeal. it's been seven years now. she says she was raped repeatedly every day by her alleg

i'm richelle carey. welcome. hope you're having a great day. let's continue with this story we've been on top of for you. the case of little somer thompson. it has investigators baffled. continue to look at her picture. three days after the 7-year-old girl disappeared in florida she was walking home from school. there are still no solid leads. her distraught mom continues to plead for her child's return. >> i did her hair for her in the morning. put it up in a ponytail. i can't even remember if i told her i loved her. i went to work and told them to have a good day. she wasn't feeling well. i told her just try to go to school. if you need me, call me. >> officers now expanded their search in the orange park area. this is near jacksonville. they say they have interviewed dozens of known sex offenders in about a five-mile radius. volunteers are scouring the woods. officials say they just need a break in this case. they are expected to give us an update about the search later this afternoon. we will carry that live for you, so please keep it here

richelle carey had a chance to sit down and talk with him. >> you got from it being devastating to being a survivor to now calling it a backhanded blessing. >> yes. >> what was that journey? how did you get there? >> it's quite interesting what happened. five years later, when i was diagnosed as a survivor, i didn't say anything about it until that time, until i was over that hump, that five-year hump. and i was at a golf tournament in north carolina, wilmington, north carolina. and the beauty of this event is every year you get to see where the proceeds from the previous year went. and this particular year they were raising money to buy a vehicle to go out -- outside of the city and test people. and i said, that's incredible. i mean, people who can get free examinations and whatnot. it's much needed. being a survivor myself, and the shock on everyone's face. i said, yes, i am a breast cancer survivor. well, that was an eye opener. i said, you know, i should start talking about this. and the feedback, so many men have come up to me and said, you know, as a result of reading your story, i

i want to welcome richelle carey joining us for "what matters" segment. what do you have, richelle? >> mike, what makes derrion's death more senseless is the number of people who did nothing. it seems the code on the street known as no snitching has kept people quiet. this is hard to watch. but i'm going to show it to you because you need to see it, if you hadn't already seen it. that's the problem, so many people have seen it. this is cell phone video someone shot. there are about a dozen people who stood around and did nothing. didn't even call police and are not calling police now. what can be done to get people to step up. joining me now, t.o. hardiman. and amina, i know that derrion is going to be buried tomorrow. i know you've been in touch with his family. i saw something this week where a member of his family said the way they were getting through was praying for forgiveness. how are they getting through? what can you tell me about that? >> well, you know, this is a hard, you know, a hard thing to deal with. communitiwise, as well as family. but they're just getting through

i'm richelle carey. hope you're having a good day so far. want to tell you about something right now. take a good look at this picture. a massive search is under way in north florida for somer thompson. officials in clay county are asking everyone to be on the lookout. this second-grader vanished walking home from school monday. officials say somer was with other kids. she ran ahead of them because they were teasing her. now the sheriff in clay county is asking for information about a blue sedan seen in the neighborhood. there were two men and a woman in the car and tried to lure a girl in the car near somer's elementary school. they're not saying there's certain there's a connection. but they're certainly looking into that possibility. >> at this point right now we're looking for a lost child. we don't know what happened. we don't know that this is a crime. we're assuming that it could possibly be. because a 7-year-old it's almost been 24 hours is not going to wander off. but she could have gotten locked in a car, in a trunk, she could be -

. >> richelle carey spoke with mike brooks how these investigators might piece together what happened they talked about the possibility that a convicted sex offender could have been involved. >> one of the other things they are looking at is registered sex offenders. >> there is a lot. >> 84 in orange park alone. 14 of those predators. one of the things i find encouraging, if one of these people is involved normally something like this happens, we don't know the cause of death. we don't know if the poor girl was sexually assaulted but there is usually a transfer of something. trace evidence. dna. all sex offenders are in a national database. exactly. if one of these people are involved and they find dna when they are trying to determine cause of death that will help in the investigation. >> so the search is on now for the killer or killers of little somer thompson. an autopsy is being performed to determine how the little girl died. as for her mother and hundreds of supporters, there they are from last night. they held this vigil. at that point all they knew is a child's body had been
