i went to the state library of the virginia in richmond. and richmond historical association. then the record library, firestone library at princeton and a couple of other places to get material. i did a lot of medical research in this one. i was really surprised -- i think everyone realize that madison was quite primitive, yet in autopsies it was pretty advanced. that surprised me. >> did you find other books that had been written about this? >> there were maybe two or three biographies that had been written in the beginning of the 1970's. there were five biographies, but each of them had a page about the murder. they did not investigate it at all. they said he was killed. people said by his nephew and that was the end of it. i thought that was unusual until i started the investigation and realize how complicated the whole case was. >> was -- what was your best buy in research that will do a lot about what you learned from this book? >> the first thing was that when geoerge sweeney was arrested, the free slaves told everyone that she saw him put the poison in the coffee. ever

he was from a military family in richmond. he had gone to school with a governor harry byrne's song and then went to the emi. someone came in from the bar and said the japanese had attacked pearl harbor, and burt immediately took his date, and rushed to the closest naval facility in richmond. he was due to report on december 10th to norfolk at torpedo squadron eight. when he got to the naval facility there was an old chief petty officer there and burt said to him i'm not supposed to report until december 10th but i am here to help out, and the chief said thank you. i would like to think the navy would be able to survive for three days without you. [laughter] burt was to go on and when three navy crosses, two at midway and another at guadalcanal for seeking the japanese carrier in his avenger. another young man, third from the right on his name was bill evans, the youngest man in torpedo squadron eight. he grew up in a quaker family in indianapolis indiana, and he was in norfolk and the attack took place, and he immediately wro

at 81 downtown baltimore. 78 in richmond. seeing the showers that are riding along the frontal boundary bring rain cooled air with t as we continue to see the showers riding along the front. so right now there are some strong storms flanking richmond. north and east. norfolk heavy thunderstorm activity. and south of maryland. thunderstorms in the mouth of the chesapeake. and closer look here, we can see on the hd radar how we are cloudy skies north of baltimore. and activity, light activity. back over western portions of the mountains of virginia, and then west virginia. but we have this activity here that we will watch that continues to make a track potentially in our direction. and see it wraparound. this is an area of low pressure that has the counter-clockwise rotation. so the potential to go maybe late overnight showers is still there. as wes head through the late overnight. probably up to 2:00. into tomorrow morning. so rush hour could have a few pop-up showers in it. so plan accordingly. you see on the time line here.

and left with one considerable confederate army in the field beleagured in and around richmond and now dimmed. head thomas not insisted on taking the time and again it was not a long time, to remount his cavalry and properly prepare it for its great world, the western theater would not have been one when it was and without the great cavalry campaign that soon followed also organized by thomas in collaboration with general james h. wilson, the south would not have lost its capacity to make war. hood's army would have survived, lee would have been heartened and johnston now in north carolina, would have fought on. grant and sherman, whatever they may have said to accomplish on their own, gathered up in the end the harvest that thomas had some. yet, grant had tried to undermine thomas before the battle of nashville was fought. he hectored thomas from afar from several thousand miles away at city point, virginia and tried to get him to attack hood's confederate army before it made sense for him to do so, before his cavalry was fully mounted or his men fully organized or in their lines. his
