as noted, i'm the states politic editor at the richmond times dispatch, and i'm proud to be in sort of what's become a select fraternity of virginia political reporters who first encountered doug wilder back in 1985, 30 years ago when he was barnstorming the state as part of his historic campaign for lieutenant governor. and back then i was one of two reporters at a little newspaper in virginia up in the shenandoah valley. and i remember distinctly this day in 1985 where the door burst open, and doug wilder bounds in with his son and chauffer, larry, in tow. and it just goes to show you that he was and is a force of nature.
