a man who worked here at the station as a janitor was fatally shot yesterday in richmond. miguel ramirez became the latest victim in a series of recent shootings in the city. how simply going to check for the mail led to a family tragedy. >> reporter: it is heart breaking. miguel ramirez leaves behind a wife, three children, 4 grand children, a lot of people who loved and respected him. >> he didn't need to go yet. >> reporter: richmond police say 56 year old miguel ramirez was struck by a stray bullet from gunfire three blocks away. >> that's when the bullet came and hit him in the head and he fell down here. >> reporter: miguel's family said he had walked outside to get the mail when he was shot. >> i started walking over there. my neighbor's here said no, it's here. your brother is dead. he got shot. so that's when i found him here laying down. >> reporter: today family gathered outside his home, just feet away from where he died. >> he was always so happy, joking around, so nice all the time. he didn't deserve to go like that. >> reporter: miguel was a contract employe

this is impacting a lot of people in the richmond area. so as i said 3 of the shootings happened on sunday night in the span of one hour. then on monday officers responded to 2 separate shootings within an hour. both men were injured and uncooperative with the police investigation. police believe one of the shootings on sunday is relieved related to one of the shootings that happened on monday. richmond police say there are no details about the suspects or motives that can be released at this time. police say rich man has made great strides to reduce gun violence that has a city in all. and the recent years and this is a sudden spike in violence that has officers needing assistance from the fbi safe streets task force now specifically though looking after areas and neighborhoods officers fear could be subject to retaliatory vie violence. they also have experts making calls. in doing in pursuing other forms of gang intervention. so a lot going on they're really trying to nip this in the bud because as i said they have made some major stride
