now the coronavirus tests are being analyzed at a state lab in richmond now.smus is there this morning waiting for those test results. >> good morning, dave. this is the lab here behind us with the california department of health. and, inside is where there are 45 tests to test for covid-19 coronavirus. these tests came from passengers on board the grand princess cruise liner now off the coast of san francisco. national guard helicopters actually had to drop off and then later pick up those tests from the ship by helicopter. the cruise liner is not allowed to birth in san francisco its home port. it's dockeded about 100 nautical miles off the coast. there are 3,500 people on board that cruise ship. some of them came down with illnesses earlier this week. and also this week, a passenger who had been on that ship and disembarked died from coronavirus in placer county. >> there are 2,383 passengers on board the ship. and 1,100 crew members. of that, a total of 35 have shown flu like symptoms during the course of this 15-day cruise. >> now, again, 45 people on boa

they are pulling back closer to richmond. at night, he leaves his army where it is, half of it north of the rappahannock and half of itself. bad news for meade, lee starts slamming its way across the upper rappahannock. by nightfall, lee is suddenly squarely on meade's flank and closer to the orange and alexandria than the army of the potomac is itself. meade does not find that out until 10:00 that night when a messenger finally arrives in the upper rappahannock with the horrible news. meade has to order his troops out of culpepper county and put his troops in rapid retreat toward centerville. as he retreats, that railroad bridge goes up in flames. job security for railroad builders, they will always have bridges to be rebuilt. the armies are moving parallel to each other. there will be some interesting action around auburn. no time to talk about that. i have 100 pages on it in my second book. there is a scare for the federal second corps at auburn but it manages to get away. most of the federal army is going to get out of th

richmond is known as monument avenue and many controversies have surrounded it. i remember the statue of arthur ashe went up and was it a good thing? was it a bad thing? was it artistic? was it political? was it historical? i think the best discussion of that was done by the late absolutely great tony horwitz in his book "confederates in the attic." he looked at these questions how it was debated locally. we have a new statue, an equestrian statue with an african-american mounted with beautiful precision going up in that city. in our particular town of san antonio we have a statue that was established by the udc in travis park in the center and it was the local udc that wanted to get this common soldier put up and it was on such a high obelsisk that i wasn't sure. it was something people felt honored the confederate passed, honored white supremacy value. the question of the disposition of the statue, when it was taken down, how it was taken down, where the statue is continues to be a matter of debate here in this town. but we also have other great topics to debat

those test samples were taken to richmond.them there yesterday and the chp escorted them to a lab there. 45 crew members and passengers were tested. they either showed symptoms or they were on the first leg of that trip. three people from that leg have tested positive for coronavirus. one of those three died. they wanted to test those people who were with them. we talked with a passenger stuck on the grand princess. we asked how everyone is feeling and how they're holding up. >> we're all worrying about the worst case scenario, that this becomes another ship that is stuck for two weeks before we can get off. people are nervous about the future. >> the grand princess announced this is the last trip for now. they canceled the next cruise to hawaii that was set to leave for tomorrow. there's no word on where this ship will go or when. it depends on the test results. authorities hope to get those this morning. live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you. >>> as san francisco waits to hear when the cruise ship mi

it is a true pleasure to be back in richmond. as i was preparing, i kept noticing how many times i was talking about richmond but during a very different time. . when john first talk to me about this program, one of the things i decided i wanted to think about with you today was the changing role of military history in the field of civil war studies. and it actually works quite nicely with the book because i kind of have a foot in each camp, if you will with how i designed the book and wrote it that is true to my roots as a military historian. it is why i went to graduate school and why i have been doing what i've been doing for the last few decades. but it brings in other fields. and how it is sometimes difficult -- and this is what i wanted to think about today -- to benefit from so many other fields that are becoming mayor -- very interested in military history and civil war military history in particular while remaining true to the core principles and tenets of the field of military history. that is what i want to look at wit

the richmond san raphael bridge, we are not seeing a lot of delays.e did have a stall reported here, they cleared that off of the bridge within the last 10 minutes or so. and the bay bridge is off to a good start. there are no major delays at of east bay. if you're heading out of oakland, and raphael in san francisco, things are quiet. taking a look at your travel times, you can see everything is in the green, and the golden gate bridge is not troubles. 19 minutes southbound 101 out of marin county, 37 all the way down to san francisco via the golden gate. taking a look at traffic on highway four, we are off to a great start. no delays at of antioch, west on into pittsburgh, a point, all the way to the east point freeway. things are pretty quiet on 101 was no delays on 280 either. north 101 at holy, there is an accident reported. it is not causing too many delays as of yet, we will keep our eye on that in case things change. we will see slow in conditions as you had through the ultimate past. your drive times are in the green for the south bay. >>> ma

he spent most of his professional life in richmond. he served as attorney general of the united states for more years than anyone. andterms for james monroe one term for john quincy adams. he ran for president in 1832. as the candidate for the anti-masonic party. we haven't heard from them lately. in any event, he failed. and died almost immediately after. is also famous for having written to iraq or -- two mediocre works. i thought they were ok. one was a book called " the anders of the british spy," included sketches of famous richmond others. richmonders. wasother book that he wrote a biography of patrick henry. was wort whoat it had henry said, give me liberty or give me death. a lot of people think that was a quote that wort made up. that is the first appearance of that quote. in any event -- this is another trivial piece. the story that i had always heard as an indian lawyer was the wort represented cherokee nation for free. i mentioned that to one of cheese -- chief hopkins predecessors and he said, we have got his bill. i am david, one of the codirectors of the richmond center. i also served as the dean of columbia law school from 2004 to 2014 which i mention for a very particular reason. i was a dean when the professor joined our faculty and one of my proud moments when we persuaded her to do that. so i'm honored to kick off what i know will be a fascinating discussion about the influence oof the influence ofeurope on tl marketplace. last year "the wall street journal" called the decline of europe a force in world affairs the most consequential shift of the last 100 years and there is some truth in that since world war ii military influence of europe is certainly declined, and it's also true the economic growth has been compared favorably with that of the united states or for example with china or india. and of course efforts to maintain an economic union have been more complicated greatly as we all know. but still, i think professor bradford sees things a little differently and in her book the brussels effect of the european union rules the world which is
