this is why i say the richmond is a great place for families.our neighborhood. it has been around for a very long time. is one of our two neighborhood theatres that we have here. i moved here when i was 1959 when i was two years old. we would always go here. i love these neighborhood theatres. it is one of the places that has not only a landmark in the richmond district, but also in san francisco. small theatres showing one or two films. a unique -- they are unique also to the neighborhood and san francisco. >> where we are today is the heart of the richmond district. with what is unique is that it is also small businesses. there is a different retail here it is mom and pop opening up businesses. and providing for the neighborhood. this is what we love about the streets. the cora door starts on clement street and goes all the way down to the end of clement where you will see small businesses even towards 32nd. at the core of it is right here between here and 20 -- tenth avenue. when we see this variety of stores offered here, it is very unique t

i grew up outside of richmond. him himi grew up outside of richmond. and whenever i went to richmond and i had to travel up monument avenue, i had to deal with those monuments there. and even as a child, i wondered what they were all about. and then as i got older and i realized that they were memorials to men who had fought a war that was intended to keep my people enslaved, it became very difficult for me to appreciate it from any kind of artistic perspective or historical. and so, as a person of color, i don't think that it's enough to contextualize because people are not going to stop and read what's on a plaque if it's on a monument, it's on monument avenue or some other place. i say remove them, take them down, put them in a museum, and contextualize them there. i don't believe in destroying history, but history doesn't have to be in my face all the time, and it's early doesn't have to be on public lands that i am helping -- my taxes are helping to pay for. if it's in someone's home, it's on someone's personal property, that's their business. but

richmond is known as monument avenue and many controversies have surrounded it. i remember the statue of arthur ashe went up and was it a good thing? was it a bad thing? was it artistic? was it political? was it historical? i think the best discussion of that was done by the late absolutely great tony horwitz in his book "confederates in the attic." he looked at these questions how it was debated locally. we have a new statue, an equestrian statue with an african-american mounted with beautiful precision going up in that city. in our particular town of san antonio we have a statue that was established by the udc in travis park in the center and it was the local udc that wanted to get this common soldier put up and it was on such a high obelsisk that i wasn't sure. it was something people felt honored the confederate passed, honored white supremacy value. the question of the disposition of the statue, when it was taken down, how it was taken down, where the statue is continues to be a matter of debate here in this town. but we also have other great topics to debat

it is a true pleasure to be back in richmond. as i was preparing, i kept noticing how many times i was talking about richmond but during a very different time. . when john first talk to me about this program, one of the things i decided i wanted to think about with you today was the changing role of military history in the field of civil war studies. and it actually works quite nicely with the book because i kind of have a foot in each camp, if you will with how i designed the book and wrote it that is true to my roots as a military historian. it is why i went to graduate school and why i have been doing what i've been doing for the last few decades. but it brings in other fields. and how it is sometimes difficult -- and this is what i wanted to think about today -- to benefit from so many other fields that are becoming mayor -- very interested in military history and civil war military history in particular while remaining true to the core principles and tenets of the field of military history. that is what i want to look at wit

i am david, one of the codirectors of the richmond center. i also served as the dean of columbia law school from 2004 to 2014 which i mention for a very particular reason. i was a dean when the professor joined our faculty and one of my proud moments when we persuaded her to do that. so i'm honored to kick off what i know will be a fascinating discussion about the influence oof the influence ofeurope on tl marketplace. last year "the wall street journal" called the decline of europe a force in world affairs the most consequential shift of the last 100 years and there is some truth in that since world war ii military influence of europe is certainly declined, and it's also true the economic growth has been compared favorably with that of the united states or for example with china or india. and of course efforts to maintain an economic union have been more complicated greatly as we all know. but still, i think professor bradford sees things a little differently and in her book the brussels effect of the european union rules the world which is

this is why i say the richmond is a great place for families.re is a treasure in our neighborhood. it has been around for a very long time. is one of our two neighborhood theatres that we have here. i moved here when i was 1959 when i was two years old. we would always go here. i love these neighborhood theatres. it is one of the places that has not only a landmark in the richmond district, but also in san francisco. small theatres showing one or two films. a unique -- they are unique also to the neighborhood and san francisco. >> where we are today is the heart of the richmond district. with what is unique is that it is also small businesses. there is a different retail here it is mom and pop opening up businesses. and providing for the neighborhood. this is what we love about the streets. the cora door starts on clement street and goes all the way down to the end of clement where you will see small businesses even towards 32nd. at the core of it is right here between here and 20 -- tenth avenue. when we see this variety of stores offered here,
