this is why i say the richmond is a great place for families.re is a treasure in our neighborhood. it has been around for a very long time. is one of our two neighborhood theatres that we have here. i moved here when i was 1959 when i was two years old. we would always go here. i love these neighborhood theatres. it is one of the places that has not only a landmark in the richmond district, but also in san francisco. small theatres showing one or two films. a unique -- they are unique also to the neighborhood and san francisco. >> where we are today is the heart of the richmond district. with what is unique is that it is also small businesses. there is a different retail here it is mom and pop opening up businesses. and providing for the neighborhood. this is what we love about the streets. the cora door starts on clement street and goes all the way down to the end of clement where you will see small businesses even towards 32nd. at the core of it is right here between here and 20 -- tenth avenue. when we see this variety of stores offered here,

it came to an end in richmond. there's where kpix 5's joe vazquez is tonight, live for us, with the late breaking details. >> reporter: yeah, you can see the crime scene here behind me. the police lights, the yellow tape. at one point tonight, there were dozens of police cars here. helicopters were flying around. there was a high speed chase. this is a rather bizarre crime that ended here in richmond at 37th and cutting. according to the east bay times, this whole ordeal started when police found a woman, unconscious and bloody, after having been beaten. she was rushed to the hospital. witnesses gave police a description of a white van. officers spotted that van on the highway, and that led to the police chase, the high speed chase, that went nearly 20 miles and ended in richmond. witnesses heard gunshots and also saw an officer injured, but it's unclear how he was hurt. >> it was like back and forth. there was no pauses in between. it was clearly back and forth. >> it looked like he was injured. he was limping, gr

it's a pleasure to be back in richmond. as i was preparing this talk, i kept noticing how many times i was talking about richmond. during a very different time period. when john first talked to me about this program, one of the things i decided i really wanted to think about with you today is the changing role of military history in the field of civil war studies. it actually -- it works quite nicely with the book, because i kind of have a foot in each camp, if you will, with kind of how i designed the book and wrote it that is true to my roots as a military historian. it's why i went to graduate school. it's what i've been doing for the last few decades here. but it is also about bringing in other fields and how it is sometimes difficult is what i want us to think about today to benefit from so many other fields that are becoming very interested in military history and civil war military history in particular and yet also understand the importance of remaining true to the core principals of military history. that's what i
