[music] [music] digital literacy is something severely lacking in our world today and it takes a lot to understand that. food water and shelter have basic necessities so long we forget about wifi and connection to the interenet and when you go into communities and realize peep ople are not able to load homework and talk to teachers and out of touch with the world. by providing the network and system we are able to allow them to keep up in the modern age. >> folks still were not served by internet throughout the city and tended to be low income people, people in affordable housing. people of color and limited english and seniors, all those are high concentrations in affordable housing, so we thought given that we had a fiber network that stretched throughout the city reaching deep into neighborhoods that would be a perfect opportunity to address it in san francisco. >> the infrastructure the city and star help us run are dejtle programs. it played a critical role from the time we opene

and lee's job is to protect richmond. so he has been stymied so this movement by grant has done one of the things that grant wanted to do, and tha this movement by grant has done one of the things grant wanted to do which is to pool lee out of the war. he had to guard richmond. lee will stay there even after the attacks at petersburg have started. after portions of the union army are able to attack petersburg because lee is not sure what grant is going to do and can't leave richmond uncovered. what about from the union side? grant has now set the way from lee and has the initiative and the advantage. so he is leaving this battle with the same plus that he did after he left the wilderness, spotsylvania and north anna. this is another repetition of exactly the same set of moves so for that reason i have to say that this isn't a lopsided victory or lopsided loss. it looks like all those other movements of the overland campaign and it puts grant, grant comes out in a better position than lee came out in after the end of it. i

it happened around 9:00 this morning on sanderling island in the point richmond -- port richmond neighborhoodporter: it is still a active scene out here right now. nearly eight hours after the shooting happened inside of a home here on sanderling island, outside of our viewpoint in this direction. we know that investigators from the richmond police department homicide unit as well as the contra costa county district attorney's office are on scene right now investigating and they are expected to be out here for several more hours. a spokesman for police say they were looking for a suspect accused of brandishing a firearm and possible discharge of the weapon sunday night in the point richmond area which happened after some kind of altercation with the victim. a search warrant was later issued for the home the suspect was believed to be living in here on the 1200 block of sanderling island. they served the war in around 9:00 this morning when police say they found a suspect in the home armed with a firearm. he was shot and killed by police inside who said they feared for their lives. we are told

he joins us again live now from point richmond with the latest details. brooks well, right now yellow tape is keeping neighbors and onlookers from getting anywhere near the home where this shooting occurred. investigators have been coming and going all day, processing that scene. and all of this has come as a big surprise to those who live here. gunfire, it sounded like rapid succession. you know, 4 or 5 shots, gunfire erupted along sandra long island in point, richmond. it was just after 9 a.m. wednesday. that's highly unusual for this area. richmond police were serving a search warrant at a home, and that's when things took a turn inside of the residence. officers encountered a subject who was armed with a firearm and fear for their lives. officers were forced to return fire. the suspect was shot and killed. his name has not yet been released. i got the text messages. word spread quickly among tightly knit neighbors. they returned fire and he is dead. they are now awaiting a coroner. and i was i was really shocked to read that police say this all stemme

it's in the collections, the american civil war museum and richmond. and it was in the revolutionary war by the soldier, john ward. actually, he was on the american side. he carried it at the 7081 surrender ceremony. and then it was used by his grandson a confederate lieutenant named robert. and i've looked into a little bit. i don't the grandson actually around yorktown in 1862 that would have been just too uncanny to think about this canteen being used in both these yorktown campaigns. but he did fight in the seven days battles around just a little bit later. so i just really love the story. this artifact and the reminder that the connection between the war generation and the revolutionary was often very direct, very emotionally meaningful and and sometimes very personal as well. or whether or not they had kind of direct connection. many unions soldiers felt as though they were fighting the same for the same cause as the soldiers had fought for them. they thought about this as a second american revolution. and you see this thinking throughout the war

department conduct investigations in point richmond, brooks jarocz ktvu. fox two news. residents of a san leandro apartment complex are beginning to return after a two alarm fire forced them from their homes. that fire started around 5:00 last night on east 14 street, 42 units were damaged, leaving roughly 160 people without a permanent place to stay. restoration crews were back at the scene today trying to get many of those units back in livable condition so those residents can move back in. we've identified units that we can restore power to. we're still doing egress issues, lighting, relighting corridors, exit lighting. so for their safety before they come back in. so there's still a good amount of work to do. officials say there are ten units that will take several months to restore. nobody was hurt in the fire in the cause is not yet known. cal fire crews are mopping up after a vegetation fire scorched a little more than an acre of land in napa county. that fire broke out late this morning in the area of capel valley road, south of lake berryessa. cal

5.30, a reduction in gun violence is leading to a dramatic drop in violent crime in the city of richmond. and this is happening despite low police staffing levels. kron four's philippe djegal has the story. >> by the end of the year, the richmond police department expects to be at its full a lot staffing level. the agency is gaining more interest from recruits and once fully trained the additi nal boots on the ground will alleviate the excessive overtime. officers are working. now there's light at the end of the tunnel. >> which is great for the department. in the meantime, the current police force is managing through lowering levels of crime since the start of the year for month to month. >> almost all violent crimes are trending down that assaults and robberies. there was an increase and aggravated assaults in the last reported month. but this year there have been 2 homicides in the city of richmond. >> at the same time last year, there were 10 activity is what's going to get the guns off the streets to get the criminals off the >> so hopefully we prevent the violence before occurs. th
