in richmond. jodi hernandez nbc, bay area news. oakland is wrapping up its safest year since the start of the pandemic, according to city leaders. they're crediting their violence prevention ceasefire program for the dramatic reduction in crime. was just one day left until the new year. oakland is set to end with fewer than 100 homicides for the first time in many years. police data shows a 35% decrease in murders and a 33% decrease in non-fatal shootings from 2023. the city credits its ceasefire program, which works with community and faith leaders, to identify high risk individuals to reduce gun violence. we know that even one shooting leads to immense trauma for families. widespread hurt in our communities, and fear in our communities. and i acknowledge that one life lost is too many. but the progress we've made has been remarkable, and we will do everything in our power to keep reducing gun violence next year and for generations to come. the city revived its ceasefire program this year under former mayor sheng thao to continue
