richmond county is over in this area here. we are early in the night for that county. n to do well. this is richmond city it has been a strong area for democrats for quite a long time now. but there is no data just yet in the county that ranks 9 out of 133 counties. >> bret: it's interesting to watch where you think the biggest determining factor is here, bill. where this entire race comes down to. is it how well mcauliffe does in northern virginia or is it how well youngkin does in the southern part of the state? >> bill: that's a great question here. i think based on our voter analysis. what i can say early on, bret, is that youngkin seemed to be doing very well in the rural areas but not quite as well as trump did, yeah, 11 months ago. but in the suburbs, he was doing that much better than trump, you get it? you know, fewer people here, more people here, which seemed to portend as to why youngkin is making it a battle here in virginia tonight. i would just keep an eye on that. we will see how the percentages come in. then in these suburbs, again, martha mentioned che

a moment ago, richmond city county clocked in, 5.5%. terry mcauliffe is 70% of the vote. d expect that in richmond. here's what i want you to take note of. the suburb and the county to the north and south, these are suburban voters. chesterfield to the north and wright to the south. this has been blue for some time. mcauliffe with 97% of the vote in. he's at 54%. see what joe biden did 11 months ago on a percentage basis. almost 64%. ralph northam on a percentage basis, he was at 60%. terry mcauliffe in 2021, just come back to present day here, he's underperforming in this county by five points. that is an extraordinary measure in an election that is razor tight. now i'll go to the southern part of richmond here. this is chesterfield. one of our target counties that we thought this is a key to watch. right now youngkin outperforming his margin that he needs in order to win statewide. we had him around 51%, 52. he's up on that by three, maybe four points. you have 88% of the vote reporting there in chesterfield county as well. let me take you down to the southeastern part o

chesterfield county just south of richmond. we've got absentee vote. ocratic county d.c. metro area, again, it's absentee vote is the most democratic vote, democratic-friendly vote there is out there. long way of saying just from what i just gave you right there, just from that you can see mcauliffe netting let's say 75,000 votes. that would take a chunk out of what youngkin's got there. there are some other areas like that there. it's just hard right now to look at what else is left on this list and to get it up to anywhere near 202,000. you could certainly take a big bite out of that. certainly with what we see is left here. but mcauliffe's going to have to find a way to take an even bigger bite to actually overtake youngkin. so that's the situation in virginia. if you take a look in new jersey right now, a quarter of the vote is in. you see the democratic incumbent phil murphy. this is four points right now. now, keep in mind what you're seeing is there's two things here. a lot of the vote that you're seeing so far here is from ocean county. this is

and chris, where you are, chesterfield county, just south of richmond, henrico county north of it, the suburbs outside of richmond, suburban richmond, suburbs of washington, dc. so many people, densely populated. there's a long term democratic trend that under donald trump absolutely accelerated here. democrats made enormous gains in these places just during donald trump's presidency. it's the biggest reason joe biden was able to get up to a double disability lead statewide. this is such a key question for virginia tomorrow. and i think it's a key question nationally, because nationally there are a lot of areas like this. suburban, metropolitan areas that really swung hard away from the republican party when donald trump was president. we're going to be looking tomorrow night, how much of those gains that democrats made, how much of that surge, that trump backlash that democrats benefitted from in the suburbs, how much are they keeping now that donald trump is no longer president versus how much inroads are republicans able to make, how much ground can youngkin win back in the suburbs

i will show you one county and this is the area of richmond, washington, d.c., virginia county here. am i putting that out? it's been blue for a considerable time and 97% of the vote terry mcauliffe getting 54% of the vote. that would be good for the democrats but if you went back and looked at 2017, ralph was up 67%. so this democratic county alone, mcauliffe is underperforming. why do i bring that out? this is the pattern we see in so many places across the state where youngkin is doing better where he's hitting the number that he needed to hit to get victory here. can't call it just yet but 55/44, getting closer here in southwestern virginia, he is running up the numbers. to be expected that. not as many votes in the suburbs and northern counties here. just check in loudon while we have a minute, here you go, tucker 99% of the vote is in. mcauliffe 55% and remember youngkin had to get a minimum of 41%. that was his floor. expected to be a little higher than that, but performing very well in loudoun county. that is the picture as we see it right now. if you are in the glenn youngki

fairfax, loudon county, and richmond, virginia. a lot has been made, and i will show you right now. glenn youngkin, in loudon county, he managed to lose by only 11%. that doesn't sound great. but joe biden won by more than 20% just one year ago. one thing i want to point out. while glenn youngkin did well, if you want to know where youngkin picked up the most ground over democrats in the last few years, i want to show you. i want to compare it to the last virginia governor's race, 2017. that was a race ralph northam became the governor. and i want to look at areas where terry mcauliffe underperformed ralph northam by more than five points. and look at this. it's not the suburban areas. terry mcauliffe basic live did about as well as ralph northam did four years ago in the suburban areas. where terry mcauliffe had a real problem was in the republican rural counties. how can that be? they are predominantly republican already. take a look at smith county. terry mcauliffe got just 17% of the vote. 16.9%. you are getting ever closer to zero if you're a democrat right there. if you want to

and i will take you down to now outside -- first, we'll start outside of richmond in chesterfield countyll, this is where youngkin carried the county. it is a flip. northam carried this county, and biden. and virginia beach, biden flipped it, northam carried it also. it was a flip both in 2020 and 2017. then you get there and say, okay, what else did it? well, terry did have a problem with african american voters. here's hatchton county. he underperformed biden, he also underperformed northam out of there. let's go to rural african american county, particularly greenville county which has 60% african american. again, underperforms normham and biden. and suffolk county, the same, underperforms biden and northam. yes, he got what he needed out of the northern suburbs. trump worked here, but trump didn't work here and here and maybe on the flip side is what happened on the rural counties. let me just show you this, this is where youngkin ran up the score and essentially took whatever advantage that mcauliffe got out of the northern suburb and wiped away. youngkin not only underperformed wha

will tell you one more place here taking out of chesterfield this is the good suburban counties south of richmond city. we still believe in chesterfiel there is at least 40 percent of the vote outstanding as well. at present are performing on percentage basis. you just went in the county. 51-49. that one horde ten good things for the rest of the states. he has done that, he's hanging onto that in a moment. whether or not there's a lot of blue boats out there it ready t take away that percentage is something we cannot say. i would say generally speaking in the southeast here in the central partner richmond and appear across close up of three we're waiting unburied. >> they're is not a path here. the path is very narrow for mc auliffe to get those votes. really single-digit possibilities of somehow gettin those votes for that number. >> i would say he would have to run the tape specifically in those three large counties i just referred to, yes. >> let's look at new jersey which everybody had pretty much written off and now, let's i think there's about 60 percent of the vote in new jersey so tell us

i spent a little time in the richmond suburbs. there are countiesredibly important for terry mcauliffe. what are you going to be watching for tonight? >> in northern virginia i think it's more about the margins, who wins and who loses. if youngkin were in loudoun county, i think he would be winning the election. it's ralph northam, the democrat who won four years ago, won loudoun county by 20 points. if you cut down to 15 or 10 and you're youngkin and you're getting better margins in other parts of the state that aren't quite as blue, that's how you start to piece together a victory. youngkin will have to do better than ralph northam four years ago who won the state by nine, and they basically suggest that they have made up a substantial amount of ground but the election itself, i think it's pretty easy to see it going either way at this point. >> i've been in touch with both of the campaigns today. i would describe their feeling right now as cautiously optimistic but kind of the emphasis on the caution. if you were a betting man, how close is this

in the counties here that are more yellow, you can see the population has grown. that's largely around washington, d.c., richmond, virginia, norfolk and virginia beach. where it is yellow, the population has grown. green or blue, it's shrunk. that's the more rural counties. what did that mean largely for joe biden? look at all the blue votes that he was able to gap just one year ago. all these counties had grown substantially. so look at some of the counties in more depth. loudoun county, this is one of the suburbs of washington, d.c., a key county. joe biden won loudoun county by 25 points. that's a huge margin, and it is a vast difference from past virginia elections. what do i mean? let's look at 2013, the election where terry mcauliffe won the governor's mansion for the first time. he was governor once before. 2013, terry mcauliffe won but just by four points. compared to what joe biden did, winning by 25 points. let's look at another county. chesterfield, aurcoften seen as swing county in virginia. mccauliffe lost. what did joe biden do in the presidential race just a year ago? joe biden won chesterfield co

, where we still have light and spotty showers coming down especially in marin county, san rafael and over towards richmond rain has been lighter, and also the rain approaching vallejo. we are seeing san mateo getting light showers, and it's not reaching palo alto. there's moreover the santa cruz mountains. we can see the leading edge of the heavy rain and where we had all the gusting winds south of the bay area, and scattered showers that will continue with the connection of the atmospheric river. this is the reason why it is, because we could see the long line of clouds, and sometimes the connection lasts about two miles and stretches over towards hawaii, and the reason we call it a "pineapple express" is because it enhances the amount of moisture. the rain for the most part will stay to the north of us. when we get the shot on tuesday, it looks like it's falling apart before it gets here, so this could be the last chance of rain for a while. our reservoirs still need additional rainfall. 20% for the coyote reservoir. for our overall look across the state, it's about 50% of the historical average when we

the suburban areas, the areas surrounding washington, d.c., fairfax and loudon county, and also the area surrounding richmond, virginia. and in these suburban areas, glenn youngkin the republican did well, trailing terry mcauliffe by 11% there. if you compare that to how joe biden did, in that county, just one year ago, you can see biden won by 25 points. so glenn youngkin had shrunk that margin there, pretty substantially. and that matters. but there is something i want to point out here, when you're talking about the margins, yes, glenn youngkin did better in the suburbs than republicans had in the past, but his big pickups were in different areas. i want to compare his victory to the last gubernatorial race won by the democrat ralph northam. these are the counties where terry mcauliffe did worse, more than five points worse than ralph northam. you can see, it is not the suburban counties. terry mcauliffe held his own in the suburbs compared to ralph northam four years ago, where he got crushed was in republican rural counties where democrats aren't doing well to begin with. the so-called trump counties. i

county, across the river from washington, d.c. a lot of people, a lot of voters. area that has gone exceedingly blue over the past 12 years. the other area is in richmond. a lot of polling suggests that area is too close to call. we're watching it closely tonight. talk about the virginia beach area down here, then all these red counties in southwest virginia toward the border of west virginia. i mentioned loudon county and chesterfield county on the southern edge of richmond. four years ago by a squeaker in the governor's race barely pulled out the win. northam beat gillespie four years ago. this is virginia beach down in the southeast. glenn youngkin spent a lot of time during his youth in this part of the state. many republicans would argue it is still a swing district. we'll see whether tonight they're right about that. down in the southwestern part of virginia, i can poke around on these counties and see donald trump at 70%. i can come over here to this county and see donald trump at 83.3%. this is a big reason why youngkin was in this part of the state for the last four or five days trying to see if he can match numbers like this from 11 months ago.
