richmond-san rafael bridge. we have a few brake lights working away westbound right around the toll plaza. overall, an easy ride in both directions. there is construction happening overnight. kpix 5's jackie ward joins us live at the richmond-san rafael bridge. >> i think all of this traffic, from what i can tell is normal because construction crews back packed up about 4:30 am. they wanted to get out of here before 5 am. they are here because they are working on those areas that had falling concrete earlier six weeks ago. we got an up close look at the work they are starting to do. it will last three months. caltrans workers are replacing the expansion joints where chunks of concrete flew off last month. they are using jackhammers, low tortures and heavy equipment to replace them. >> as a precaution, there are 62 or 63 of these on the bridge we decided out of risk assessment we will replace these joints now. porter: waon 7 when one of those joints broke apart and sent cars down onto the lower deck of theidge. a

richmond bridge. >> reporter: this project will lead to lane closures on the richmond, san rafael bridge. it's something to be aware of for late night and early morning commuters. a simple fix on the bridge turned into a major $8 million project. >> out of an abundance of caution we decided to replace the remaining 31 on the upper deck and the remaining 30 on the lower deck. >> reporter: from replacing one expansion joint to replacing 60. this will be a work site for several months. after a joint failed and sent concrete onto a car, they thought replacing multiple joints would be the best bet. >> i would be nervous too if i was traveling on the lower deck. out of an abundance of caution, let's just replace them. >> reporter: the february failure was likely caused by a truck carrying a load too heavy for the bridge. inspections show no other issues but if the weight affected one joint, it could have affected others. >> it went over the entire bridge and we want to replace the other expansion joints. >> reporter: work is being done on the upper deck which will take up to three months. at th

san mateo bridge. it's clear working from 880 to 101. earlier trouble spots on 101 are clear. richmond san rafaelridge a few brake lights near the toll plaza. over all a 10-minute ride out of the east bay to marin county this morning. keeping a close eye on marin county because of the wet weather this morning. westbound 580 at bay view, look out for a stalled vehicle blocking the ramp. not affecting the main lines. another part of 580 is slow from 205 to 680. delays out of the altamont pass. you are starting into tracy through here. slow and go from 205 done nexting to the 580. past north flynn, that portion where the traffic gets better heading to the dublin interchange. nimitz is clear both directions near the coliseum. southbound is good here. we are starting to see a few brake lights southbound around a street. that is typical for the morning drive. it's clear once you get on 92 and south of there, not too bad into fremont. that is good on 880 there and chp is clearing an accident northbound 680 at mckee. the good news, it's not affecting the main lines of 680. they are waiting on tow crews.

the most important thing to note, is that the richmond-san rafael bridge is safe, according to caltrans, but they have decided to expand their project from replacing just one expansion joint, to replacing more than 60. work on the bridge will shut down one lane in each direction on the upper deck, from 9 pm to 5 am, the project will cost $8 million. the steel joints are like hinges that let the bridge shift and vibrate. nearly 800 expansion joints were replaced in the early 2000, but there are some original ones left from the 1950s when the bridge was built. those original joints will now be taken out. the first phase will replace 30 protector joints, which can take three months, the second phase will replace 30 lower deck joints which will happen at the end of the year. >> the bridge is safe. it's open to traffic, it's open to the public, the only reason we are replacing these now is of a precautionary measure. there's no damage that can be seen at this time but we are replacing them to be cautious. >> if you remember on february 7, one expansion joint failed, sending a piece of concre
