to keep slavery as an institution i only recall one black monument when i was growing up in richmond virginia the arthur ashe monument arthur ashe was a hero of mine because i was in richmond and i played tennis just like he did but i now realize it speaks volumes that the black hero in our city is willing to celebrate that our city's willing to celebrate is one who excelled at sport and did not really threaten white folks at all this doesn't mean or there as wasn't great but it sends a message if our white monuments imply excellence is fighting a war to keep black people as property and our black monuments imply excellence is politely winning tennis matches furthermore it's a little weird that the ash monument makes it look like arthur ashe was taking books away from children. and there was the childish reaction to. that can cause i just thought i. was right that it was. but this past weekend. i honestly witnessed a horrific event in charlottesville yet i'm still hopeful the anger and hatred and even murder we've seen from racists and white supremacists is the last gasp of a dying worldview
