the aftershock today 6.7 on the richter scale. that in itself qualifies as a pretty large earthquake. that did cause a lot of fear in nepal again and a lot of destruction and certainly slowed down relief efforts tremendously. to give you a sense how much that impact was, i'm in calcutta which is 900 kilometers away from nepal. to put that in context again, if i took a flight from here to kathmandu, it's more than an hour's flying time. but even here in calcutta we felt that aftershock this afternoon. people came running out into the open fearing what would happen. it's slowed down rescue and relief efforts in nepal. the runway was shut for a few hours this afternoon, which meant several aircraft-carrying relief supplies and emergency personnel were not able to land. it also created a lot of panic again amongst the people in nepal. a lot of people have been camping outdoors. they spent last night outside either in tents pitched in a football field or just by the roads outside. they are too afraid to go back indoors. sometimes some

geological survey if it was reassessed to be an 8 or higher on the richter scale, that would be considered a great earthquake. something that only happens about one time a year. unfortunately, this has happened in a very populated part of the world. and the pictures that are streaming in on social media and from reporters on the ground show significant damage. we already have reports of fatalities as well. what you're looking at here is what is called a shake map. it gives you an indication of the epicenter. this is northwest of kathmandu. this is nepal, india. it gives you the idea of the intensity or the shaking that took place. i know it's difficult to see, that shading of yellow stretching into the orange attributed to the lines around the epicenter indicates strong to very strong shaking that took place just outside. and you can see how the lines and circles also encompass the nation's capital indicating that the shock waves were felt in that area. of course we've seen the damage and heard the reports of fatalities. i want you to see how this has stretched into the northern portion of

sanjeev: the last time was 1988, we had a six point some richter scale earthquake. this was east of kathmandu and we had 1000 deaths at that time. this one because it is so shallow so shallow and that is why you see the massive death and station -- devastation and loss of life. charlie: how many people were killed in haiti? laurent: [indiscernible] at half a million injured. the number one thing that we learned is to bring the country back to normal and avoid by all costs the tent camps. in doing boat -- doing so, providing centers to residents that are in dire need of help to respond quickly and evacuate people to other cities, but to avoid the tent camps. after the earthquake, we had about 1.5 million people in tent camps that represented 50% of the residents of port-au-prince. that was a huge challenge after and it took us four years to solve that problem and it took us over $100 million in cost. it is important for the 30's and first responders -- authorities and first responders to apply a strategy, to avoid the people staying in tents too long. charlie: do you
