rick perry says he can't be bought for $5,000.he was lying about that in that we have specific records indicating that merck gave him directly a lot more than $5,000. in fact, gave him $6,000, then $16,000, then $7,500. the number perry made up as the number that you can't buy me for that merck supposedly gave him is actually a much higher number. he's leaving the question sitting there. how much can he be bought for? >> it's pretty funny because if you talk to lobbyists at the texas capitol right now, the going rate, everybody says before you even get into a conversation with his officers and staff, is about $200,000. he's right. he's a bit pricier than $5,000. it's also considerably ironic that this guy runs around saying that he wants to make government as inconsequential in our lives as possible. but to benefit his friend, mike toomey, he's willing to insert government into the lives of young women, age 11 and 12, and force them and their families to get a vaccine. this is the way it's been in texas under rick perry, lawrence.

some of these numbers for rick perry are just, we're curious about you, rick perry. we really want to know. so that's -- >> david, i think a part of this, we don't like to talk too much about it but i'll do it darn it. part of this may be southern conservatives, christian conservatives, people in the religious right, who have been shopping around looking for a candidate like them and romney isn't like them. he is a member of the lds church, obviously a northeastern guy, harvard guy, st. paul's guy, whatever, went to one of those schools up there and he is not one of them. isn't it as simple as geography if you look at it that way? >> in part. there are some very influential republicans back in 2008 who felt that mitt romney would have a mormon problem particularly in the south among christian conservative voters. he's going to put that to the test. it is i think very difficult to poll for that. very difficult to know about that. but i wanted to add another element too which is i think there are some shades of 2004 here as well. when you think about the candidacy of s

texas governor rick perry jockeying with mitt romney for the presidential race. rick perry has never lost an election in his 26 years in elected office. not one. and that is not because he hasn't had hard fights. not because he hasn't had serious well-funded high-profile big-name challengers. just last year, for example, he was challenged in his re-election bid for texas governor by texas' long serving popular republican senator kay bailey hutchison. and there were two things that i found surprising that the hutchison for governor campaign tried to use against rick perry. the first was the more or less famous rick perry gay hidden text in the campaign website. remember this story? a reporter for the austin american statesman found in the summer of 2009 the kay bailey hutchison campaign website included a huge long list of terms that seemed designs to make her website pop on search engines. sometimes when you google something and click on one of the search results but the website that comes up doesn't actually contain the terms that you searched for? that sometime
