rick scott -- rick scott.s the guy who came up with disastrous plan for the republican senators to run on. it involved, you know, essentially sunsetting on medicare and social security and the entire social safety net. not a good idea, not popular. didn't get them any votes. and in fact they don't have the senate. so i would think he'd be an unlikely person for the republican caucus to turn to. as for senator hawley, i have no idea what he thinks he's doing or what he thinks he's saying. is he doubling down? is he saying let's go in some different direction? it's entirely unclear, except that as you -- he doesn't like being out of power. but that's where they are going to be for the next couple years at least, and so they got plenty of time to kind of figure this out among themselves. but again, i'm not putting my money against mitch mcconnell at this point. >> yeah, let me show a little bit more, because this is a fast moving story. chai, there's a lot going on. we're going to get to some other stories coming

jeff, could rick scott have the votes to challenge mcconnell?ow do you see this battle playing out? >> in a word, no. rick scott is coming off of one of the most disappointing and some would even say disastrous times as the chair of the national republican senatorial committee. rick scott is not going to be the leader of the senate republicans. there's no question. now, it is an open question what the timeline of this is. senator lindsey graham said he thinks the leadership elections should be put off until after that georgia runoff. so, the timing of this is still an open question. mitch mcconnell, the republican leader, certainly has the support of the majority of his conference. at least it seems like that right now. it would be hard pressed to see who would step forward to challenge him. take a listen to what senators bob cassidy and -- had to say about mitch mcconnell. >> the great wrestling champion rick flare used to say, to be the man, you've got to beat the man. so, i support senator mcconnell. >> going forward, mitch will be our leader

jessica, rick scott is making a go for it. what are you hearing? >> reporter: good morning.hat we know is we just heard from mcconnell's spokesperson, they did fight back and mcconnell managed to win in the first round, and they are not delaying this vote. there had been a push for some senate republicans, including scott and others to delay this leadership vote. that did not go through. they are not imminently moving to their leadership vote. as you mentioned, it's mitch mcconnell against rick scott, scott mounting this long-shot challenge. it doesn't appear he has nearly enough votes to beat mcconnell. it is worth noting that he is challenging mcconnell. he's never had a real challenger like this, so it speaks to the deep division within the republican party both on the way forward, how close they want to be to donald trump, how central he will play into their path moving forward, and the messaging, what the path is forward. before all of this, you know, scott and mcconnell in leadership they would show up, stand next to each other, but it began to become very clear they w

i like what rick talked about. come into the dysfunction that's not only washington, d.c. and congress, but our conference. i mean, we don't discuss numbers, we don't have an organized format for laying out, you know, how western come down, you know, how we should set an agenda son some of these major issues. we need serious discussions. that's going to take about a month, and i think democrats are smart in terms of delaying their elections until, i think, the first week in december. we ought to follow suit. maria: well, you wrote about this in a recent op-ed if the wall street journal. then you've got the democrats saying we're not going to hold leadership elections until early december. but mitch mcconnell is in charge, and nobody wants to go against him, i guess, because he's the one who's deciding who's going to get to run committees. so what are you going to do about it? >> well, maria, think about it. if we hold those elections right away wednesday, you probably have more campaigning done in a high school cla

mayor's race between democrat karen bass and republican rick caruso.ernal has more. >> reporter: amara, boris, this is still a very tight race, but karen bass is expanding her lead little by little. saturday morning, she was up by about 4,000 votes. then we got new numbers saturday evening. she is now up by about 9,000 votes. look, this is a race between the establishment candidate. karen bass has been representing los angeles in congress for years now. she was endorsed by former president barack obama. she was on the short list for president joe biden's vice presidential pick, so she is essentially that establishment candidate here in los angeles, up against a billionaire, rick caruso, a real estate developer here in l.a. he is from the area. she is we-- he is well known. he was an independent and now a republican. a lot contributing to this uphill battle he's had here in los angeles. he's dumped a lot of money, his own money, into this race. it will be interesting to see if that money will help him at all in this race. the other thing to point out he
