rick leventhal joins us. anything new to report? >> a few bits and pieces. sheriff said the investigation is progressing. they have had a few tips but few have panned out. they released the clothing that the mother and son were wearing. the mother was wearing a baseball cap, tan hoody and tennis shoes. her son was wearing black jeanses, a gray tee shirt and they are trying to determine what the other woman was wearing. investgators have fanned out across the area, also volunteers looking for any sign of life. they are getting less and less optimistic about finding these three alive. >> the reality that these folks may not be alive is becoming more and more prevalent because there has been no word from these folks. there is no credit card activity. there is no cellphone activity. anything like that since this event occurred last week. >> they were asked if hoffman is getting help, but the answer is no. >> the they went to the family's home? >> that's right. between 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. the truck was in the driveway. he knocked on the door. no answer. >> he went

our senior correspondent rick leventhal with the news live now in mt. vernon. your team spoke with that neighbor as well. what else did she have to say? >> well, shep, the neighbor says that matthew hoffman seemed normal and friendly when he first moved in about a year ago. that he had kegs and invited them over for beers and that her friend started dating him and actually moved in with him and said things were great until about a month or two ago when he started acting very strange. eventually she says he choked this woman. she broke it off and moved out. the neighbor says this ex-girlfriend looks very much like that 13-year-old girl that police say was found bound and gagged in his basement. >> shepard: that neighbor today mentioned this park near the suspect's house. the spot where he gold with the backpacks and return without them? >> right. and police have been there searching that park. divers have been in the waters of that park. in fact, tonight they pulled a vehicle out of the water. and they are getting ready to pull another vehicle out of that water.

let's get to our senior correspondent rick leventhal with the news tonight in mt. vernon, ohio. more today, rick, but not a lot. >> we did, shepard. and we also learned today that hoffman wasn't actually in court for his bond hearing. he appeared there on a video screen. authorities told us that was because of the high profile nature of his case. they also told us he was wearing what the sheriff called a suicide gown because apparently he made comments to investigators and jail personnel that he was -- might be a danger to himself. we learned today as well that hoffman was first arrested 10 years ago in colorado and spent nearly seven years in prison there for arson, burglary and car theft. his parole ended just a month ago. shep, tonight i spoke with his public defender who told me that hoffman is cooperating with him but wouldn't say if he is cooperating with authorities. >> shepard: what else are we hearing, rick, from police will b. their search for these three missing? >> well, we know that they are focusing their search on three particular areas, including foundation park,

rick leventhal live in mount vernon, ohio.n the investigation, the latest on where that stands this morning is where? >> reporter: well, bill, we're in a park that's very close to the home of matthew hoffman where police say they found that 13-year-old in his basement. hoffman apparently used to spend a lot of time in this park and that's why they've been searching here as well, locals trying to scour the fields and water, and divers went into 86 acres of lakes and pulled two cars out of the water but they don't believe those vehicles are related to these missing people. again, the missing, tina herman, 32, mother of that little girl, the girl's brother, cody, still missing, and a friend, stephanie spring, who is 41. none has been seen since last wednesday, although a lot of blood was found in the family home and police say the evidence points to the possibility these three may in fact be dead, stephanie's father says he's not giving up hope. >> i know this, the time frame has been long between when they've disappeared, but we

rick leventhal in musn't vernon, ohio what is the latest on the search there? >> reporter: bill, the sheriff has told us they did recover significant evidence, including a tarp and trash bags closed with duct tape. they said they have a receipt from a local walmart that the suspect, matthew hoffman, where he bought a tarp and trash bags, divers at a nearby park, searching shallow waters, including snorkel gear, looking for evidence of the missing three people. they've been also searching in the woods near the family hole and woods near where the mother's pickup truck was found, though no sign of the missing three people yet today. bill: what about the suspect i mentioned, the latest on him, and is there cooperation with him, rick? >> reporter: well, not as far as we know, bill. i spoke with his public defender yesterday who told me he was cooperating with his attorneys but not necessarily with authorities, but we did get a good look at matthew hoffman who appeared via video from his bond hearing. they kept him in jail because of the high profile nature of the c

rick leventhal is live in mount vernon, ohio. some new information, we're hearing, rick, about the suspect, huh? >> reporter: yeah, jon, that matthew hoffman, the prime suspect, did know this family or made himself known to them, somehow. the sheriff not saying exactly how. but also that he may have been watching them. we also learned today jon for the first time that hoffman was actually spoken to by police last thursday night. police were called to nearby kennon college, where the missing mother's pickup truck was found and when they went to kennon college they found matthew hoffman sitting in his car near a bike trail right across the street from this location. she spoke -- they spoke to him then but didn't go to his house until sunday morningings that's when they found the 13-year-old girl pound -- bound and gagged in the basement. he spent several years in colorado before being released on parole and moving here in 2007 jon. op jon what's the latest on the actual investigation? >> you may see some vehicles behind me. there is
