rick leventhal is in the newsroom with more on this. ny sign of a suspect in this case? >> reporter: no, martha. the guy had no idea apparently that the hostage was part of one of america's famous baseball families. with a gun he approached 74-year-old vi ripken. bounled her with duct tape and put some kind of mask on her and drove her around central maryland for 24 hours and parked near her home. she didn't know her son was hall-of-famer, cal ripken, nicknamed ire man for playing in 2600 consecutive games. her son billy less played bass ball and her husband managed the team for some time. police say there was no ransom demand. >> we can't say what the motive is. we're still looking at investigation. we're looking at every witness, every clue. for us to say or speculate on a motive would be unfair and just, wouldn't be true. >> reporter: vi says the man told her he wanted money and her car and said he would return her safely and he did. martha: what more do we know about the suspect if anything, rick? >> reporter: we don't know much. pol

let's bring in rick leventhal, who is live in our newsroom with more on this. rick, what's your reaction based on your background on this story to these sanctions? >> reporter: well it is a stunning series of events, martha. absolutely stunning level of penalties being imposed against penn state. you may have heard at the very beginning of that news conference the ncaa said that admitted these are historically unprecedented actions. they said warranted by the conspiracy of silence maintained at the highest levels of the university and a reckless and callous disregard of children. now what we're, what we've now learned is the fine of $60 million is the annual grossrevenue, the average gross revenue of the penn state football program. that is one year. it is not about the machine any in this case. the post-season ban, four-year post-season ban. only one other football team gotten a four-year ban. three others got a three-year ban. this is a very long ban on postseason play. how about vacating all the wins from 1998 through 2011. all those wins wiped off the books.

rick leventhal has this unbelievable report from our new york newsroom. >> reporter: local and state police now investigating this bizarre case with help from the fbi, collecting forensics in the car, checking toll plaza records and looking for surveillance video who may help identify the suspect who apparently wanted money and a vehicle but had no idea how valuable his hostage was. early tuesday morning, a man with a gun approached vi ripken at her home, forced this grandmother of seven into the backseat of her lincoln. he bound her and drove around central maryland for almost 24 hours, then parked near her home, got out of the car and walked away. police apparently learned of the abduction when a witness spotted vi tied up in the backseat at a gas station tuesday night, but they didn't find her until 6 the next morning. the man didn't know her son is former baltimore oriole player cal ripken, nicknamed the iron man. her son billy also played pro ball. the suspect has not yet been identified. >> police are still looking for a white male, late 30s to early 40s, with a tall, thin buil
