let's go to rick leventhal, live in point pleasant, new jersey, where we have seen the conditions deteriorating by the hour. rick? >> we moved off the beach. it was too nasty out there. we moved to the hotel one block from the beach. where the power is now coming on and off every few minutes. i want to show you the water just now preached over the sand dunes. you can see it pouring over the side of a wall. water is now coming over the dunes. pouring toward ocean avenue. look to the left there. the waves, the churning surf is really incredible. you see the red warning flag there. blowing this wind, it's got to be over 60, 70-mile-per-hour gusts now. trees are bending sidewards. we're hearing the howling of the wind. the waves are just ferocious. and those waves could very well if the storm surge predictions are correct begin crashing over the dune and cover the ground floor of the hotel. it's getting worse by the minute and by the hour. not in the peak of the storm yet. >> kimberly: that's rick leventhal on the beach. now we go to steve harrigan, in ocean city, maryland. steve? rick leventhal on the devastated jersey shore.hannon green on the storm damage in virginia, and ed henry tonight from the white house on the storm's political impact and the campaigns that are, tonight, frozen in place. many east coast residents heard or read weather forecasts and there's speculation about hybrid storms of the hurricane and nor'easter, perhaps, a super storm, as sandy approached, and they were understandably skeptical of what often turns out to be exaggerated meteorological storm forecasts. tonight they and millions of others find themselves suffering through what has turned out to be the mass devastation, wreckage, and misery that had been forecast for the eastern seaboard. fox news correspondent rick leventhal has our report from point pleasant, new jersey. >> reporter: point pleasant beach is one of many seaside communities up and down the jersey shore that saw extensive damages from hurricane sandy as a plastic a short. behind us, ocean avenue now covered in sand and debris, one of many communities not dealing

let's get right it to our correspondent rick leventhal where they have taken a beating all day. s it? >> shepard, we're one block in off the beach. the ocean has come to meet us here on ocean avenue. and i'm not sure if you can see it, i want you to listen to the wind for a second. i'm not sure if you can see the water that's rushing down the street but there are white caps coming off the ocean. the dunes that were there protecting the land from the sea from completely washed away. there are literally waves of water rushing down washington avenue across ocean avenue. now up to the front doors of many of the homes here. up to the bumpers of cars and parking lot of this hotel. the power is outhere. it's been out for some time now. and we have seen no vehicles on the road. you really can't drive on these streets right now. the wind doesn't seem to be dying down at all. i would say it's gusting well over 70 miles per hour. and, again, the water is the main issue now. the storm surge as they predicted has become reality. stormthe ocean is now in point pleasant beach, covering the stre

we move down to rick leventhal live on the shore. but now in point pleasant. rick, you've been working yeoman's hours down there. what have you found for us today? >> reporter: well as we've been hearing from the governor, bill. yesterday he said yesterday was a day for sorry row and he wants to focus on rebuilding today. this is one of the reasons why new jersey's transit system for the most part grounded because of boats on railroad tracks. this is not the only one. this is a scene repeated up and down the coastal train lines. you see all sorts of debris, pilings, pieces of dock, generic stuff. there is a fuel tank over there. you see another boat off? in the distance. there are boats on commuter rail tracks. these train tracks lead to the town which was hit as hard as point pleasant was. there are oil leaks keeping residents off the streets. there are numerous if not hundreds of damaged homes. sand in the streets like we saw in point pleasant beach, cars overturned. the situation is very, very bad. the they're not letting people into that community. spring l

we begin with rick leventhal at point pleasant beach, new jersey. ning, rick. >> bret, the wind is ridiculous at this hour. at #:00, i clock wind gust at 57 miles per hour. it feels like it's 70 to 80 now. i'm hanging on the rail or i probably, well, you can see the street. the ocean is merging with the ocean avenue. if you look to the left, not sure if you can tell how ferocious the winds are. they're in the 12 to 15 to 20-foot range. at times curling and crashing over the dunes to bring water to point pleasant. this town was evacuated yesterday. most of the residents heeded warnings. all of the beach communities up and down the new jersey shore were evacuated. some people chose not to leave. that included atlantic city, new jersey, where a section of the boardwalk washed away. emergency workers were rescuing some residents with light boats and -- lifeboats and high water vehicles throughout the day. at this point, the governor told people if you are still home, don't try to get out. hunker dune try to ride the storm out. the storm surge could be ti

that is where we find rick leventhal this morning. what more have we learned about the attempted attack, rick? >> reporter: good morning bill and martha. i confirmed this morning this young wannabe jihadist was under constant video surveillance by members of the joint terrorism task force. there was a room full of law enforcement officers watching this guy on big screens in the operations center downtown. he was followed by a surveilance team and arrest team from his home in jamaica, queens, to a warehouse where he allegedly load ad van with his 1000 pound wannabe bomb. 20, 50 pound bags of ammonium nitrate covered with a tarp. he headed to the federal reserve bank downtown in new york, with a undercover agent with him. they parked out front under the watchful eye of the fbi. went to a room nearby at the millennium hotel where the suspect allegedly record ad video where he said, quote we will not stop until we attain victory or martyrdom and then he tried to set off the bomb with his cell phone. >> law enforcement is vigilant. certainl

rick leventhal live in point pleasant, new jersey where pounding waves punched through the sand downsng the ocean into the seaside town. all kind of damage, huh, rick? >> yeah, jon. cleanup can't begin until the roads are cleared. that is starting to happen right now. look how short the parking meter is now. a few feet of sand beneath my feet. you see them clearing standoff ocean avenue which was a raging river last night. some of the beach-front homes lost the front of their homes, and there is sand in their living rooms. come around this way, i want you to see looking south on ocean avenue how badt is. there are rolling downs on the street that in some case are about three feet deep, and there are many homes along this stretch of the ocean oven that are heavily damaged if not destroyed. i talked to one homeowner, his mother's house right on the ocean he said is a total wash, and there are streets behind us here in the community that are underwater as well. of course this is just one of dozens and dozens of towns up and down the new jersey coastline that are in deep trouble right now

now for the latest on what is happening in new jersey, here is rick leventhal. >> we are in a town onre founded 125 years ago this month and facing the greatest challenge in history. hundreds of homes are heavily damaged or destroyed including these on the beach. some of them knocked off the foundation to expose gas lines. utility crews all day to cap the lines. in the travels around the small island we have seen cars that were buried in some of them up to five feet of sand. there was four feet of standing water here. a lot of daniel to homes. about 1,500 homes here that many of which will not be able to be repaired. we saw boats on the glimmer glass draw bridge that were in dry storage, dry dock. that were carried to the bridge by the rushing waters from the atlantic ocean. the bridge is not structurally sound. we saw boats on the train track. much worklet to be done and -- left to be done and residents not allowed back in. >> bret: thank you very much. that will take some time. west virginia officials are blaming super storm sandy for five deaths, including a state legislative candi

rick leventhal is live in point pleasant, new jersey. rick: it is a hurricane on steroids. we were seeing wind speeds in the mid-to high 40s. my wind gauge now has a top reading -- i don't believe this, 95.4 miles per hour. i'm not sure that's possible at this hour. but definitely in the mid-to high 50s just minutes ago. we are still at low tide. it serves in a very violent purpose. the lowest line roads are impassable. atlantic city new jersey, many are underwater and we are just not even beginning to see -- just not seeing the storm surge eight to 12 feet as possible. at the barrier islands and beach communities, they have been evacuated. mandatory evacuation in effect. 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. and the roads are shut down. no one can can get into point pleasant beach. they are virtually no businesses open. people are staying off the beach. except for me. i'm going to get off they'll see. megyn: what have you seen? >> i'm not getting anywhere near those waves. they are very dangerous. but the wind -- i'm not making this up. it is blowing me around out here. this is the stron

and, you know we had low tide here not too long ago as one of our buddies running, colleague rick leventhalhrough our shot over there. he, a wind gust out here of 95 miles an hour. not sure if that was a rogue gust or what but we're getting a good 70 i would say right now. if you look into the teeth of it, that is kind of what you see. and you see the intensity of this storm which is not backed off at all. it is just continue to blow. i'll tell you, been through a lot of hurricanes. this is lasting a longer time. if we go until 7:00 or 8:00 tonight, before it makes landfall, then you've got the back half of this storm, that was what forecasters said from the start. you got a storm that is going to sit on you a long period of time. that not only does more damage, but it also figures to push this water into the beach. high tide, ground zero time. we'll be here. somewhere. ashley: i have no doubt about it, jeff flock, almost eerie silhouette there, backdrop of the waves, blowing sand and win. as jeff points out though, if sandy is starting to pick up speed a little bit maybe the storm can get

look at the picture behind our own rick leventhal and you can see why. >> these are two of hundreds of homes in manasquan that were heavily damaged or destroyed by hurricane sandy. this community founded 125 years ago this month suffering horrendous, horrendous losses. we are standing on what is left of a boardwalk shredded. you can see the steel bulk head in the sand that is the first time that steel has been exposed in 50 years since the last time a major storm did this kind of damage in 1962. you see just feet and feet of sand that have been moved off. as you look down the beach at million dollar-plus homes that lined the coast here that are now just trash, many of them were pushed off of their foundations, many gas lines were broken. we can smell the gas in the air. there are gas crews here trying to shut them down and make sure there aren't any fires or explosions, but a very dangerous situation. residents are not being allowed back in at this point. we just took a tour with the mayor a short time ago to the other end of this piece of land to the glimmer glass drawbridge. we want
