rick leventhal has been on scene all day.he news broke around 9:30 in the morning and about an hour later when all the details started to unfold, it just got worse every time a report came out and here we are tonight trying to piece this together. police in hoboken, new jersey, say that they are talking and questioning the suspected gunman's brother, as rick was talking about. and two people who might be his roommates in new jersey. hoboken right across the hudson river from manhattan in new york city. you might remember seeing pictures of it under water after super storm sandy. anna kooiman is live in hoboken. what are you figuring out about the scene and what it's like behind you there? >> bill, yes, we're piecing things together just as you are. the building behind us apparently, the apartment home of the brother of the shooter, 24-year-old ryan lanza, as well as two other people. the building is still roped off with police tape. we got on the scene about 4:30 this afternoon and we counted about ten f.b.i. agents and hobok

get to scene with rick leventhal who is there and has been throughout the day. rick, describe what is going on there now. >> well, john, we had another briefing from the state police regarding what they can tell us, what they are comfortable sharing with us at this hour. remember the shooting was less than eight hours ago. the information has been changing throughout the day. but what we know now is they got a 911 call from the school, just after 9:30 this morning. newtown, connecticut police officers went to the school. immediately called for state police backup. when the rest of the officers arrived, they didn't wait. they went inside that school looking for children, looking for adults that could be brought out of the school and brought to safety with the knowledge that there had been a shooting inside that school. officers located two rooms in one area of the school. that is where the 27 bodies, victims were found. two of the victims were children who were taken to a hospital. and died at the hospital. 18 other children dead in a classroom. five other adults

rick leventhal is live in new york city with more, rick?reporter: family members of keyes's victims say this is best thing that could happen, serial killer spares himself and sparing trials and delays in punishment. israel keyes is being held in jail cell in anchorage, alaska, facing trial for the murder of a 18-year-old girl abducted from a coffee kiosk. they believe samantha koenig was killed and her body found in ice covered lake. keyes used her atm card in several states before being caught in texas and tried to escape during trial. [shouting] >> back up. >> get him back. >> reporter: tough to hear that was obviously audio from the courtroom. keyes was alone in his is cell when he was found dead. authorities wouldn't say how he ended his life. he gave very little information about these alleged other murders. he claimed responsibility for at least four other murders in washington state and the other in new york but few details. he confessed to killing a couple in vermont, bill and lorraine currier, from essex. their bodies were never fo

i would like to get back to rick leventhal now. hearing from one of the parents, where are the children? when they arrived at the school, they were told not to arrive. but many people came. where are they? >> they have set up an area of the local firehouse. as we understand, many were led out of the school. the teachers locked their doors when they heard the gunshots fired. minutes ago, we could see a lot of police officers blocking all the roads that lead where the school is located. that entire area has been locked. so the police have the area on lockdown. we know that they have the school on lockdown. we know that they did a room by room, search. they located the gunman and the children. and as far as we know, children have now been reunited with their families. megyn: is there any information on this man's connection to the school? the shooter. we heard that this may have been the father of a student. have we heard anything from one person about that? >> i have not heard that from law enforcement yet. we do have one source sugg

and our own rick leventhal son the scene. rick has the latest. >> schools are on lock down. the medical examiner and investigators are collecting evidence and going to the gruesome task of identifying bodies of 27 victims, including the shooter who shot himself after killing six adults and 20 kids, inside that have school. what we're now being told, what i've been told by investigators and federal law enforcement sources is that shooter killed his mother, shot her in the head in the home they share, here in newtown, connecticut this morning. then, took the three weapons she owned, a glock, a sig sauer handgun, and he gained entrance to the school through security, and then, opened fire. we know police responded. you heard the tapes we know they called in reenforcements. officers didn't waist time. they went into the school got kids in the survivors out of the school, moved them to a nearby fire house, set up as a staging area that. is where frantic parents were directed to collect their children, and take care of their kids, and get them home, safely, sean. >> sean: a couple

rick leventhal there with the latest as well. rick?er: neil, as you said, we're waiting for update from the connecticut state police, regarding any additional information they can give us about the horrific shooting that happened earlier today at the sandy hook elementary school in sandy hook, which is in newtown, connecticut. confirmed 26 people were found dead inside that school. were killed in that shooting. 18 children dead in the school. two died at the hospital. six adults found dead inside the school, including the shooter who we are told now bywt sources is 20-year-old adam lanza. initially people identified the shooter as 24-year-old ryan lanza. that is adam's brother. apparently, adam may have been carrying ryan's i.d. and that's why there was confusion initially. we're told that the shooter was adam. his brother is now being questioned by authorities in hoboken, new jersey. we're told adam's mother was killed and a body was found inside the parent's home in newtown, connecticut. it's unclear who that body is. there were repo

rick leventhal has the latest from newtown. what is going on there today, rick? >> reporter: jon incredibly challenging times for the community, struggling are with the aftermath after that horrific mass murder. sending kids back to school and reassuring those kids they will be safe in those classrooms. in fact security has been beefed up at the six cools in the newtown school district that reopened their doors today. a sign in one window said, quote, we are strong. the flags are flying at half-staff. the we also saw more moving vans rolling from sandy hook elementary which is the one school still closed. it is still considered a crime scene. all the desks and chairs and equipment and supplies from sandy hook are being moved to another hill. chalk hill, in the town of monroe about seven miles away. that is where school administrators hope the survivors of sandy hook can go back to school sometimes perhaps later this week, jon. jon: there are pogue to be more funerals today? >> we had two funerals yesterday. two more funerals today. a heavy police presence outside

rick leventhal live in newton, new jersey. s the number of bears killed is actually down this year, rick? >> reporter: yeah, a very quiet day so far at this check station, jon, and reflects the sharp dropoff in the kill total. we're in the third year of a five-year black bear management program in new jersey designed to reduce the number of bears and reduce the number of bear/human interactions. after three days last year, 311 bears were killed, this year just 193 killed. some say this recent warm weather may have played a factor because the bears have already gorged themselves on food and aren't out looking for more, but critics say it's evidence that this is about trophies and not about public safety. >> i've lived in the bear country for over ten years, and i've never had any issues with black bears. >> but other people have. >> there has never been an incident, a serious incident in the state of new jersey with a black bear. not in its history. >> reporter: well, one reason for the fewer bears being killed, jon, could also

bill: rick leventhal live in new town with this now. do we know anymore details about the killer, rick? >> reporter: well, bill, we have learned new things about adam lanza. particularly he tried desperately to cover his tracks before his murderous rampage, smashing the computer hard drive according to police sources making it much more difficult to read his electronic data trail he left behind a former baby-sitter was saying there were early signs of his unpredictable behavior. adam's mother warned to keep close eye on the 12-year-old boy at all times. never turn his back on adam or go to the bathroom. less than a week before friday's shooting, nancy lanza, adam's mother that she was losing adam and he was getting worse. he suffered from asperger's a form of autism and he apparently used to burn himself because he felt no pain. he spent most of the time alone in the two bedrooms that he had in the family's sprawling home and reading and playing computer games. police trying to learn all they can about adam lanza in the days ahead, bill.

rick leventhal joins us live from newton, new jersey, with more. >> reporter: there's been a sharp dropoffhis year, last year hunters were rolling in regularly with dead bears in the back of their pickup trucks. this year just a handful have come in as part of this program designed to reduce the number of bears across the state and reduce the number of bear/human interactions in the state. 193 killed in the first three days this year, 311 first three days last year. some say that the bears have already gorged on food and are laying low, but critics say it's evidence the hunt is about trophies and not about public safety. >> i've lived in bear country for over ten years, and i've never had any issues with black bears. >> reporter: but other people have. >> there has never been an incident, a serious incident in the state of new jersey with a black bear. not in its history. >> reporter: well, the state says the goal of this program is just that, to make sure there are no serious incidents. they've reduced the population from 3400 in 2010 to about 2800 today. bear sightings are down, but ther

>> reporter: dakota meyer recently spoke with our rick leventhal.said he was hit over the head with a bottle and kicked and beaten on the ground by a group of up to 10 or more people. he woke up hospital with three staples in his head. meyer says this. he gave us a statement. he said the circumstances are unfortunate and doesn't go beyond that the altercation broke out at an event facility in columbia, kentucky, called, the red barn. we're waiting to find out from police specifics on sunday's at kerrtation. authorities say the severity of charge against alleged teenage attacker suggests that dakota meyer was see rememberly injured. he was hurt bad enough to be treated and released at a local hospital. the 18-year-old is charged with second degree assault following the fight that happened in the early hours on sunday. dakota meyer is the recipient of the med tall of honor which he received last year for his role in a 2009 fight against the taliban in afghanistan. meyer killed eight insurgents and said to save the lives of 13 american and 23 afghan so

rick leventhal is live in newtown, connecticut, with the latest. weather day today. but despite this heavy rain, there will be five, at least five more funerals and memorial services held here in newtown today for the victims. there will also be a moment of silence observed at 9:30 a.m. across the state as well as in new york and new jersey, massachusetts, even the white house observing that moment of silence. and other states all the way down to florida where they will then ring 26 church bells for the 26 victims killed inside sandy hook elementary. and last night we got word that a gunshot where nancy lanza bought one of her weapons was raided by the atf. no word on what they may have found there. but nancy lanza was remembered at private funeral services in new hampshire with heavy police protection. she was shot four times in the head by her son, adam, before he smashed his computer hard drive and set out on his murderous rampage. investigators reportedly having a tough time retrieving data from that hard drive, which might reveal who adam playe
